I forgot about the industry "standards" and bought Reaper out of frustation and have never looked back, we get 2 updates per week, a forum with thousands of developers including myself on there as well since for some reason every reaper user is not a dick!!.

I have a daw that if I want to add any extension I need I can as it's part of the Reaper licencing. I have even started to code for Reaper making plugins that might seem obscure but can be very helpful. Each track has 64 channels, and due to that the VST/VSTI effects plugins In/Out Pins are exposed to the user which no other Daw out there has!!!!! with this each track in Reaper is in fact a daw in itself due the vst in/out plugin pins being exposed to the user so you can manipulate left or right or stereo postions ON THE TRACK ITSELF without using any Buses!!! I don't know of any Daw out there that has this much needed function. For live work this thing smokes anything out there.

Ya Ya I am nuts about Reaper, because Reaper made me learn how to code, even made my own themese, my own plugins on top of the hundreds that come with reaper already in only a 6 meg install!!! Christ the Reaper install even allows you to install it as a portable app what more do you want?? REAPER FTW tongue

Every weekend my 50 track project runs on Reaper on my MSI laptop, this project is setup to control the lighting, the smoke machine, switching my Fx unit patches ( 2112) which goes into an edirol fa101 to the laptop) and this is controlled with my simple invention of using a usb pc typping keyboard inside a metal box that has holes drilled on top and has push spring switches so when you push the switch the button rod goes down and touches the programmed key ( done inside reaper)

I am on stage controlling play, stop, and every function I need.
The project runs auto all I have to do is play the guitar and sing lol

I prearrange the project at home, so that the patch switching is done auto for me against the backing tracks. But I can also switch patches all well since the box has about 10 buttons on there ( more can be added) since there is no soldering as the buttons just go down and touch the keys that are then mapped in Reaper for functions I need This cost me about $20 to build and I also bought 3 of the same typping usb keyboards in case one fails, it takes 20 seconds to swap the keyboard from the box since there is no soldering. I made 2 boxes and they are both hooked up to the laptop in case one fails.( right beside each other)

With all due respect to you Lord Gaga that comment was just a simple approach to say any DAW is suitable. House music, which is my genre, was made on whatever you had. Lord Gaga you cool with me, no disrespects. At the end of it all its just wav files to be processed, any DAW will convert. But lest not speak so quick on kids they do send a message as to trends if you wanna follow.

@ Coolios,

At first, I didn't want to intervene in this article, mainly because there
are already over 160 comments now, and a little more than half are really oriented towards the main subject of this article, namely :
'Pro Tools 10.3.0-VR'.

About REAPER :
...Each track has 64 channels, and due to that the VST/VSTI effects plugins In/Out Pins are exposed to the user which no other Daw out there has!!!!!

Perfect... and can be see as 'FANTASTIC' by some 'Reaper' users, but... what's the point to be able to get 64 Channels per Track. I mean, you set this 'extra' function within, say, 10 'regular' Tracks, and logically, you end with 640 Channels !
Do you have the project to record the 'Vienna Symphonic Orchestra',
the 'London Symphonic Orchestra', and also the 'Philadelphia Symphonic Orchestra', with some less large 'Symphonic Orchestras' all together,
to eventually match all these Channels ?
And here's where I want to understand what may be the advantage of
all this abundance of Channels, apart perhaps the fact that all these used Channels per Track can better fit if you have a small or 'regular' Computer Screen, than 640 Individual Tracks, of course !

Because, if as you say it (and I heard about this 'extra' feature) you can get 64 Channels per Track, why don't create/use a single Track within Reaper (most of the users don't need to get more than 64 Channels within their projects) and make a 'Reaper' version with a single Track solely...
If it contains only 1 Track (but with 64 Channels included), it may therefore measure the size of a cigarette pack inside your Computer Screen !!!.

About the fact that within 'Reaper', you can make your own 'stuff' as creating your custom Plug-Ins, Routing schemes,... vs the majority of others DAWs, and particularly 'Pro Tools' (as you frequently say it),
you must to know (or a least try to understand) that the majority of
the professional users of 'Pro Tools' need and only want to have in
their hands, an application/product that is ready to be used within
seconds, that is reliable, that matches the 'Pro Standards' usually found
in the professional industry... and these same professionals certainly don't even care about making their own Plug-Ins. If they want a specific Plug-In, they certainly tend to buy it (them), install it (them), and use it (them), and voila...
These professionals mainly act/work in areas where all must be OK
within seconds/minutes depending of the task(s) to be accomplished,
and this is certainly the main reason why 'Pro Tools' succeeded so well
in these areas, nothing more...

By the way, I'm not a 'Pro Tools' user (this is for personal choice solely),
but some facts and proofs must to be taken in account despite that you completely like an application, or a contrario, that you dislike it totally... yes

Lord Gaga...I'm 40 so I'ma old school/new school guy. I hate Skrillex but throw on Dennis Ferrer and I'm with that. I love old rock easy rock Blues Funk classic things like Isley Brothers. But my point was if kids is doing it and be efficient then why grown men can't just know to use whatever tools you got, and make a jam.

Matter of fact....GAGA did you get Piano In Blue and how does it work with your flow? I got it and mannnnnnn its a BEAST!

Lord Gaga,
A lot of patience is required these days in order to go through shitload of purely commercial crap in today's popular trends to find music that is well composed, well orchestrated.

I've seen songs get to top charts with only a melody, bassline(that isn't even working with the melody) and ridiculously pumped 808 drums and I have to admit I sometimes do it too to fatten up my wallet, but amongst all that crap, you can find some impressive gems.

The true challenge in those trends is to make instant hits for kids and keep the older ones happy with beautiful musicality.

Maybe this generation is trying to find it's own identity, and has to make what may seem like crap, in order to do so. They have to make mistakes to learn from them. It happened many times before, for example the rock'n'roll generation being dismissed by their elders as rebelling teenagers going through puberty. Nowadays, people are seeing them as legends and dismissing today's music. The challenge is even harder for this generation, due to changes in and out of the industry, so I just hope we'll make it through.

As always no offense, but it might be wrong to believe that the next generation won't be making good music(I don't think you said that, so it's for the people who believe that). Only the crap/great ratio is changing; it must be about 1/30 now rofl
Be the spark that will ignite the passion, teach the art of reverse-engineering to this generation.

We once did it with rap music, if I may call it that. Remember our parents said its not Motown and and such but we stuck with it because it was a voice for us. This is all a cycle. It comes and goes and we evolve as men and move on....look at Timberland he seems to change and steal, like Dre.

so funny , all that hype about ProFools, it still is behind all other DAWs.

NO 64 Bit (still 32 Bit app)

NO 64 Bit Audio Engine (now it can handle 32 Bit whooho)

NO Midi Learn for Plugin Parameters
(with a non AVID Controller have a look at Studio one how wonderfull it is solved there)

NO offline Bounce

The only nice thing is its customize able Color Theme

just my opinion

Don't be surprised a lot of Protools users are jupmping ship as you can see from Avid's AAX format, you can tell that Avid is in Dire Straits here!!! I know personally 2 close friends who switched to Reaper after seeing my live show. Since Protools is still geared to the "In the studio BS" that is why it sucks bad when you want to run something quick, or vst or vsti why has Avid been so stupit and tried to force everyone on their crap plugins!!!!

VST wrapper jesus even Sonar goes back to Sonar 4!!! for that LOL

Avid needs to dump all the old code from Protools and take a hard look at Reaper at 6 megs is putting Protools to shame.

Protools still sucks ass with midi, no parameter learning WTF this is 2012 not 1990.
No Vsti, No Vst have to use a dumb ass wrapper.

That is why Protools is such a hog on resources at least 80% of their code is almost 15 years old!!!!.

Avid needs to bring Protools into 2012 that means leaving some people behind as Apple is famous for and no one seems to complain there....

I have more features in a 6 meg app then a 2 gig installed app that is pathetic!!!

I am not offending anyone here I am just looking at the reality of things out there in the real world as has been proven here, if you take away the hardware Avid Protools is a damn joke compared to other Daw's !!!

Yes I came from Sonar 8 and moved right into Reaper and have not looked back.

Another thing Avid needs to get the ilok removed as it leads to so much code just for the protection, you paid for an app to work to it's fullest and expect that .

Waves did it and so can Avid dump your crap ilok!!

I am a heavy contributor to the Reaper Forums and help out even people who just walked in to Reaper that is what Reaper users do. That is why Reaper is growing with massive movement. If major tv stations are looking at Reaper and using it, you know things are changing.

This is a technical report I hope it can help:

System : win 7 x64
Pro Tools blocked in firewall.

Problem: After a while, like 10 minutes more or less. A windows comes up saying:
MF: Application has been compromise.

Then it freezes.

S-VHS was/is a standard too. But video 2000 was a better system.
So much for "Industry standard" :D "Better" is not the same as "More popular"
