Popular Music and the Poetics of Self in Fiction screenshot
English | 368 pages | BRILL (December 2, 2021) | 9004500693 | PDF | 3 MB
Popular Music and the Poetics of Self in Fiction explores the various links between the self and popular music in contemporary fiction. In the novels discussed in this volume, musical references go far beyond creating a tapestry of sound, they make literary characters come alive by giving an account of the physiological and psychological effects of their musical experiences and of their ways of life in different (sub)cultural and social groups. With plots revolving around songs and albums, musicians and bands, and fans and scenes, the thematic focus on the self encompasses the relation of musical taste and identity construction, popular music’s function as a medium of individual and collective memory, and its uses in everyday life across decades, spaces, and genres.

Arts of Incompletion Fragments in Words and Music screenshot
English | 314 pages | BRILL (July 16, 2021) | 9004467114 | PDF | 6 MB
Incompletion is an essential condition of cultural history, and particularly the idea of the fragment became a central element of Romantic art. Through its resistance to classicist ideals it continued being of high relevance to the various strands of modernist and contemporary aesthetics. The fourteen essays in this volume, based on the 2017 Stockholm conference of the International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA), for the first time address incompletion in a wide range of literary and musical texts, from Baudelaire and Flaubert through Tolstoy and Henry James to Bachmann, Jelinek and Janet Frame, from Nietzsche and Chopin through Russolo and Puccini to Rihm and Kurtàg. Two further essays deal with topical general issues in the field of word and music studies.

Electronic Sound - Issue 84, December 2021 screenshot
English | 100 pages | True PDF | 13.79 MB
We seem to say it every time we sit down to put together our end-of-year lists, but what a 12 months it has been for electronic music. Especially for our cover star Julie Campbell, aka LoneLady. As well as being the winner of our Album Of The Year award, she’s also partly responsible for a second record in our Top Five. She’s the first artist to achieve anything like that, by the way. We reviewed almost 900 albums in 2021. Not all at once, obviously, because that would be mad. But covering 900 releases is pretty staggering. And we’d have liked it to have been more. The wealth of incredible music out there means that for every record we did review, there was a big pile of others we weren’t able to include. That’s the problem with being a print magazine. There’s only so much room in each issue, so we have to draw the line somewhere.

Music's Monisms: Disarticulating Modernism screenshot
English | ISBN: 022679122X | 2021 | 296 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Daniel Albright was one of the preeminent scholars of musical and literary modernism, leaving behind a rich body of work before his untimely passing. In Music’s Monisms, he shows how musical and literary phenomena alike can be fruitfully investigated through the lens of monism, a philosophical conviction that does away with the binary structures we use to make sense of reality. Albright shows that despite music’s many binaries—diatonic vs. chromatic, major vs. minor, tonal vs. atonal—there is always a larger system at work that aims to reconcile tension and resolve conflict.

Playing guitar has many stages: you start off learning a few chords, followed by riffs, solos, and then hopefully some songs. The next few months or years are filled with playing anything you can get your hands on. Most guitarists then hit the stage where they don’t know what to learn next. You might spend lots of time looking on YouTube and endlessly searching the Internet for something that will get you to the next level of playing.

Sight Reading for the Classical Guitar, Level I-III: Daily Sight Reading Material with Emphasis on Interpretation, Phrasing, Form, and More screenshot
ISBN 10: 0769209742 ISBN 13: 9780769209746 | 17 MB
This book for the classical guitar has been compiled to improve sight reading, an often neglected aspect of musicianship. With the guitar, musical components (scales, chords, arpeggios, etc.) may often be played in various positions. While this is one of the reasons that the instrument produces such colorful and interesting timbres, it also contributes to the difficulties of sight reading. It is important to develop facility in reading, recognizing the notes, as well as the bar positions in which to play them, the fingerings, the rhythmic patterns, and any markings if interpretation (dynamics, phrasing, articulation, etc.). This book provides an orderly and systematic approach to the study of sight reading, based upon standards for sight reading for the classical guitar found in respected schools around the world.

Phonographic Memories: Popular Music and the Contemporary Caribbean Novel screenshot
English | ISBN: 0813596602 | 2019 | 236 pages | PDF | 950 KB
Phonographic Memories is the first book to perform a sustained analysis of the narrative and thematic influence of Caribbean popular music on the Caribbean novel. Tracing a region-wide attention to the deep connections between music and memory in the work of Lawrence Scott, Oscar Hijuelos, Colin Channer, Daniel Maximin, and Ramabai Espinet, Njelle Hamilton tunes in to each novel’s soundtrack while considering the broader listening cultures that sustain collective memory and situate Caribbean subjects in specific localities. These “musical fictions” depict Caribbean people turning to calypso, bolero, reggae, gwoka, and dub to record, retrieve, and replay personal and cultural memories. Offering a fresh perspective on musical nationalism and nostalgic memory in the era of globalization, Phonographic Memories affirms the continued importance of Caribbean music in providing contemporary novelists ethical narrative models for sounding marginalized memories and voices.

Book Reports: A Music Critic on His First Love, Which Was Reading screenshot
English | ISBN: 1478000112 | 2019 | 416 pages | PDF | 1 MB
In this generous collection of book reviews and literary essays, legendary Village Voice rock critic Robert Christgau showcases the passion that made him a critic—his love for the written word. Many selections address music, from blackface minstrelsy to punk and hip-hop, artists from Lead Belly to Patti Smith, and fellow critics from Ellen Willis and Lester Bangs to Nelson George and Jessica Hopper. But Book Reports also teases out the popular in the Bible and as well as pornography and science fiction, and analyzes at length the cultural theory of Raymond Williams, the detective novels of Walter Mosley, the history of bohemia, and the 2008 financial crisis. It establishes Christgau as not just the Dean of American Rock Critics, but one of America's most insightful cultural critics as well.

‘This welcome addition to the literature explores the connection between music and the social production of remote places. In a series of case studies from around the world, the book succinctly lays out the challenges of peripheral locales, but we also learn how musical activities emerge because they take place in the periphery, not just in spite of relative isolation. In a timely fashion, Christina Ballico and her co-authors effectively communicate these ideas in the context of a contemporary, inter-connected world.’
