You dont need to be a hit man to be a good teacher, nor to be a good musician...

Remember that 'Saliere' teached 'Beethoven' in Austria.
Then 'Beethoven' teached 'Czerny' who never got that inner will to be a composer.
Then 'Czerny' teached 'Liszt', who made wonderful pianists in the XIX and XX century.

Some songs have never been successful or have gone unnoticed by the general public, perhaps the singer's voice does not please the arrangement, the epoch in which it was done, the artist's charisma, the record company did not spend a lot of money to publicize the work.
Perhaps your phenotype, does not help you get a hit.

You may think that both the verssions were successful in their time, but is wrong, there were songs that nobody remembers, maybe in a small local area, is like Hegel proposes in his Zeitgeit, each time (Zeit) has its own history, its social weight and it's small truths.

This is the case of Robert Hazard who in 1979 composed - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, which only achieved a hit four years later in teh voice of 'Cindy Lauper' , who earned millions for both.

or

Original (not a Hit) - GLORIA JONES - TAINTED LOVE (1964)
Cover (a Hit) - Soft Cell - Tainted Love (1981)
later the same did 'Marilyn Manson'

Both beautiful Hits, I would like to have a clone of Dolly (that time), but that hair is real?
Original - Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You - (1974)
Cover - Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You (1992)

Hit success in both versions (does not deserve on Britney Spears)
Original - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - I love Rock 'n' roll (1982)
Cover - The Arrows - I Love Rock (1975)

Original (not a Hit) - The Family - Nothing Compares 2 U (1985)
Cover (a Hit) - Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (1990)

Both amazing:
Original - Burt Bacharach - Always Something There To Remind Me (1963)
Cover (a Hit) - Naked Eyes - "Always Something There To Remind Me" (1983)

Could not forget how the English 'Paul Young' did better the'Daryl Hall's' music.
Original (not a Hit) - Daryl Hall & John Oates - Everytime You Go Away (1980)
Cover (The Hit) - Paul Young - Everytime You Go Away (1985)

Hey Quincy, I know that you hear me! As it is, an arrangement can change everything.
