SWAM-S stands for Synchronous Waves Acoustic Modeling – Strings.

Differently from SWAM, sound is generated by pure Physical Modeling, so there are no samples at all.

We have performed an in-depth study of the Physical Modeling techniques, especially the Digital Waveguides Synthesis by prof. Julius O. Smith. Using this technique, adding new elements and performing an unceasing fine-tuning, we have built the best modeled Bowed Strings virtual instruments on the market, allowing the real-time control of bow speed, bow pressure, bow position, vibrato, portamento, harmonics, tremolo, pizzicato, and many other parameters in a realistic way, almost indistinguishable from the real instrument.

I dont's know what do you meaning by How "Many pedals"!
But yes
All the Sample Modeling stuff needs expression pedal or breath controller,
or if you want just to hear the sound simply open your daw and automate the expression,

The best combination is the TEC breath controller ($120) and a keyboard with some assingnable Midi knobs or sliders. There are around 30 Midi assignable parameters, but you most likely won't need them all. You can make the assignments and store it for your setup e.g. wind controller/keyboard.
A good start is using the breath controller for the loudness, the keyboard for playing the melody and the mod wheel for the tremolo amount.

Or, without further controllers, get a Roli Seaboard ;)

Unlike the winds, the strings are not too good ...
It would be good to try the flute and the bassoon.

pretty good for modelling plugins, theyve come on a long way and such a small imprint but the attack sounds wrong and lifeless and all very flat.. thank you very much for the opprtunity to try this though

It does need a lot of fiddling around, to get it to sound even half-way "violiny". Change the attack to hard, poly to auto & play around w/ bow pressure. If you haven't an expression pedal, it's a bit more difficult! Best to use mod wheel for vibrato, honestly. You do rly need another CC input! Maybe fudge one w/ PB?

For what it is, you can get some nice results. It's nowhere near as good as the woodwind / reed models tho :(
