“ETERNITY” VINTAGE COLLECTION Get a taste of our upcoming project “DREAMS”

We wanted to learn the lost techniques that were being used on some of the best analog recordings from hip hop and electronic artists over the past few decades.

There is something about the beats from classic hip hop albums like Illmatic, The Infamous, and Enter the Wu-Tang sounds that is so raw, yet still soulful.

They just had a timeless vibe to them that modern hip hop has failed to capture again fully.

And we wanted to figure out why!

We discovered one of the biggest reasons is that they were using analog recording mediums like tape instead of all of the digital processing done today in computers and DAWs.

Magnetic tape is an imperfect media.

Because of that, it will impart its own sound signature to signals recorded into it.

These include a different frequency response, frequency dependent saturation, high-frequency compression, flutter, wow, hiss, asperity noise and much more.

We invested in a bunch of vintage recording gear, from 4 track cassette recorders, to reel to reel tape machines, and anything else we could get our hands on.

And spent many late nights recording and finding the perfect settings for capturing the classic hip hop sound we were looking for.

Once we finally got everything dialed in we took all of our best recordings from our studio sessions and ran them through our tape chain.

And the results were pure gold!

These are methods that not a lot of people talk about, and I think the people that do know about it don’t even want to share it...

Okay so now they're branding classic hiphop albums like Illmatic as lo-fi? LOL

I was actually going to comment on that, the jist of it being: Do people understand the difference between Classic Hip Hop (not Old School, being late 80s to early 90s, Golden Era stuff,) and LoFi? The two are distinctly different. But, sadly,I guess Hip Hop has been whatever corporations, media outlets and labels say it is for some time now.
Also? "...a timeless vibe to them that modern hip hop has failed to capture again fully." Why is everyone so Hell-bent on making music old again? I enjoy old stuff, I have an old-meets-new style of beatmaking, but I also enjoy some modern Hip Hop as well: Rapsody's newest album, "Eve," is Modern Hip Hop and it's solid; "Stream of Thought" 1 & 2 by Black Thought were also standout albums for last year. Hip Hop wouldn't be Hip Hop if it wasn't constantly evolving.
That being said, it's Cymatics...so what do you expect?
