Pathways is a sample-based Max for Live instrument that allows users to draw paths (made of small points) for sample playback over a spectrogram interface. The playback path (in blue) is based on which points were drawn first to last, allowing for all kinds of linear and nonlinear playback possibilities. It offers two playback modes that support a variable rate of playback (and freezing) without altering the pitch.

The Codex Buranus, compiled, in all likelihood, in South Tyrol in the first half of the thirteenth century, has fascinated modern scholars and performers ever since its rediscovery in 1803. Its diverse range of texts (some famously featuring in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana) and music gives testimony to the intensely vibrant, plurilingual, and multicultural milieu in which the Codex Buranus was compiled, but poses a challenge to modern users. Perhaps more so than many other medieval manuscripts, it is an artefact which demands, and benefits from, an interdisciplinary approach.

ETHEREAL TEXTURES

Gentle Winds is a collection of the experiments conducted for Dan Keen’s eventual Petrichor library. Recordings of an array of Saxophones and Recorders were made and combined with Fracture Sounds’ atmospheric sound design to form a library of ethereal woodwind textures, available for free! To form ideas for his latest library, Dan Keen set about recording a set of woodwind instruments in a dry space to get a sense of what the instruments could achieve and how that would translate into samples. The experiments were successful and eventually led to the “Wisp” articulation, which forms the cornerstone of Petrichor: Earthy Winds.
