Dub Reggae is the follow-up to Splice Sessions’ first Island Reggae pack from our studio time at Anguilla Music Academy. Dub music originated as a subgenre of reggae and is characterized by remixes significantly manipulating the original recording, usually through the removal of vocal parts, emphasis on the rhythm section (the stripped-down drum-and-bass track is known as a riddim in the reggae dub communities), the use of studio effects such as echo and reverb, and the occasional dubbing of vocal or instrumental snippets from another piece of music or sound.

I was doing a lesson yesterday where we were breaking down a beat off of a Tyler the Creator record, and it came out very quickly the main drum beat was a breakbeat sample off an old Allen Toussaint record. Because I had the break in my collection, we able to relatively quickly get pretty close to the sound on the Tyler beat, and we were able to talk about how samples are important in production.
