It is constructed using the same components as the violin, the only difference being the larger size. Its stately and dark timbre contrasts sharply with that of the violin and makes the viola perfectly suited as the violin familyā€™s middle voice.
Its bow is a little heavier than the violin bow and the horsehair a little broader.
The characteristic sound of the viola is a result of the following factors:
The viola is tuned to a fifth lower than the violin (C3 = 4th string, G3 = 3rd string, D4 = 2nd string, A4 = 1st string). This means that the frequencies of the two instruments are in a ratio of 2:3. If this ratio were applied to the actual size of the instruments the violaā€™s body would have to be 12 cm longer (i.e. around 54 cm) than it actually is (around 42 cm).

Imagine your track contains lots of hissing, pops, background noise. When you are attempting to do the best job possible you want to take out as much of that noise as you can. There are three main ways to deal with this noise: you can cut out the unnecessary spaces in the audio. You can automate the volume to either mute or turn down the audio. Or you can use the Pro Analogue Modelled Gate.
The Pro Analogue Modelled Gate is a device that acts very similar to a compressor, with one major difference - instead of increasing the volume up in quiet sections, a noise gate reduces the volume. You can see that the main settings on the device are very similar to a compressor.
Similar to a compressor, the threshold determines when the gate is triggered. On a compressor, when the source goes above the threshold, compression is triggered.
