SYNTHiC4TE | March 02 2020 | 646 MB
Grammy Award Winning Engineer, Mixer, and Producer, Mick Guzauski, has made a name for himself as one of the top mixing engineers in the world. With over 27 #1 singles, few have risen to the heights of success that Mick has.

In this pureMix.net Exclusive, Mick opens his mix of Jamiroquai's song "Vitamin" to explain his thought process, workflow, and techniques that he used to create this incredibly tight, punchy and exciting mix that manages to have a ton of space without ever losing the impact of the tight performances.

Learn how Mick:

Enhances low end on kick drums
Creates a crisp and tight high hat sound with a stereo spread
Adds space around elements of the mix with carefully chosen and tuned reverbs
Adds compression without character to subtly control and already great sounding lead vocal
How he sets up session routing to quickly create stems when requested
Tweaks his stereo bus EQ to create a tight low end while still controlling subsonic energy

Watch Mick Guzauski mix Jamiroquai's "Vitamin". Only on pureMix.net

Thanks for this...

we're actually doing Mick a favour by freeloading this instead of buying it, anything to limit the funds he has available to spend on food!!

He's a Godfather. Big in Audio knowledge and Food studies.

But most importantly of all he's saving us hours trying to create industry standard mixes, ones that can cost $10,000.

He's just big-boned.

Seriously though, his neck shows signs of goiter which is caused by hypothyroidism, which can cause obesity in people who don't necessarily overeat. Or maybe he just eats too much. Don't know, never met the guy.

One thing I've learned watching all these assorted mixing videos is just so how arbitrary much of it all is. Except for some basic principles, every mixer's processing varies wildly. What it boils down to in essence is that there's a million ways to make a good mix and a million to make a bad one. Just be one that, in all your dial twistings, lands firmly on the good mix side of the ledger.

Add to that a bit of luck, ambition, opportunity knocking, right place right time, who you know, word of mouth reputation, etc. and shazam, you're a genius mixing engineer people hang on every word.

Not saying there aren't things to be learned, of course there are. Just don't expect some magic formula to follow. There isn't one. Like many of them say...use your ears... cuz much of the time they're just doing the monkey banging away on a typewriter routine themselves, lol.

I think Mick more than most gives that unfavorable impression, his results speak for themselves BUT something about how he talks and mixes just seems so slapdash... (Actually Dave Pensado is similar with his slow drawl and lack of vitality) I saw this on another of Mick's vids with an S6, he was moving the faders like a 12 y/o kid with a very dumb look on his face, and lots of inaccurate info or bumbling vibe...

still, what he 'knows' and his 'taste' is what he's selling, he gets results regardless of how. You wanna see more impactful/intelligent seeming mixers (inc the why's and werefores) check out Tchad Blake, he's my favourite, his mixes are AWESOME, and he's very humble. And Andrew Schepps always comes across like he actually knows what/why he's doing something instead of just accidentally finding a way.

All that said, when you do finally become great at mixing it kind of is that way, you don't fuss and over-analyse, you just instinctively feel/know and it can be quite hard for some to convey that thinking in a video, Mick is one such guy who comes across as a bit dull (in both senses of the word) but again, he obviously gets pro results and big money so must be doing something right.

And yeah there ARE a million ways to make a great mix and it DOES come down to your ears and your knowledge of what tools are needed, mixers aren't magical just experienced! :)

elbandito,
harsh words-Jamiroquai is of course a matter of taste, but to say:"a crap song, with crap instruments, crap lyrics, recorded badly" is just "peep"...I would love to listen to some of your "perfect" musicianship and mixes...

uses the Digidesign EQ3 7-Band EQ these days ? - and the Bomb Factory BF76 "1176 emulation" ?

'one of the top mixing engineers in the world. With over 27 #1 singles, few have risen to the heights of success that Mick has.'

You can also learn from the chains and see how consistent these videos are we know LA 2a ,Elysia, EQ4, CLB 1 EQ 1 are used by the Grammy Mixers. From Puremix to Mix With the Masters. Pensado Place and Produce Like a Pro , Rick Beato are very good resources.

Agreed. But one more thing to note is that in all off these PRO engineer vids - the tracks have been "cleaned - de harsed /de-mudded - leveled already by assistants. And recorded really well through very expensive gear. These guys just throw on a comp here an eq there. Its OK, but its not the reality most mixers have to go through.

And also WTF is wrong with people. Who cares about his weight or appearance. You dont know if he has a condintion or not? Enjopy his knowledge - that's the bottom line. Its quit rude to say that he's "BIg In Food Studies".
