The Mind's Ear: Exercises For Improving The Musical Imagination For Performers, Composers, And Listeners Ed 2 screenshot
English | ISBN: 0199937044 | 2013 | 192 pages | PDF | 948 KB
The Mind's Ear offers a unique approach to stimulating the musical imagination and inspiring creativity, as well as providing detailed exercises aimed at improving the ability to read and imagine music in silence, in the "mind's ear." Modeling his exercises on those used in theater games and acting classes, and drawing upon years of experience with improvisation and composition, Bruce Adolphe has written a compelling, valuable, and practical guide to musical creativity that can benefit music students at all levels and help music teachers be more effective and inspiring.

The book also provides provocative ideas and useful tools for professional performers and composers, as well as offering games and exercises to serious listeners that can increase their musical understanding and level of engagement with music in a variety of ways.

I honestly thought we musicians all had it ! Dawned on me over the years that it is not so...
I've had this ability since 5, for the last 44 years. Multitrack and multitimbral, baby !
So I will read this book to see how other's perceive it, and see if the exercises are actually any good...
The Clavichord is from the Late Middle Ages. It's not a Clavinet.

I had the exact same thought. If hearing in my "mind's ear" was true for me I only assumed that it too held for other's who at least composed. I'm not quite sure how a musician could function without this innate ability. Imagination to me is a personal creative reaction and reflection of how I see, hear, taste and feel the world that I perceive, and the music that I craft and the raw emotions that are filtered through my experience in my experience emanate from my mind outward...or so I assume. I guess that I need to grok his thesis before commenting further.
Music is always a commentary on society.

This is what I always believed...
Taoist meditation may be showing me otherwise. I'm not sure yet !
Will I ever be sure ? Do I care ? hehe.
