Dawn of the DAW: The Studio as Musical Instrument screenshot
2018 |ISBN: 9780190296605 | English | PDF | 250 pages | 8 MB
Dawn ot the DAW tells the story of how the dividing line between the traditional roles of musicians and recording studio personnel (producers, recording engineers, mixing engineers, technicians, etc.) has eroded throughout the latter half of the twentieth century to the present. Whereas those equally adept in music and technology such as Raymond Scott and Les Paul were exceptions to their eras, the millennial music maker is ensconced in a world in which the symbiosis of music and technology is commonplace. As audio production skills such as recording, editing, and mixing are increasingly co-opted by musicians teaching themselves in their do-it-yourself (DIY) recording studios, conventions of how music production is taught and practiced are remixed to reflect this reality.

Dawn of the DAW first examines DIY recording practices within the context of recording history from the late nineteenth century to the present. Second, Dawn of the DAW discusses the concept of "the studio as musical instrument" and the role of the producer, detailing how these constructs have evolved throughout the history of recorded music in tandem. Third, Dawn of the DAW details current practices of DIY recording–how recording technologies are incorporated into music making, and how they are learned by DIY studio users in the musically–chic borough of Brooklyn. Finally, Dawn of the DAW examines the broader trends heard throughout, summarizing the different models of learning and approaches to music making. Dawn of the DAW concludes by discussing the ramifications of these new directions for the field of music education.

Technology and in particular DAWs killed the music.

Foster, my friend, may be, you are a music journalist? Your love for loud words is enormous, and you always search for a sensation or a scandal

Hi bud!
It's not loud. It's the very fact. Just look at:
http://music.ishkur.com/
and many others.

Those music have been developed by the incognizant fellows using DAWs or other similar tools. Digital tools are not being used as intended in favor of making great music.

Everybody picks one of them and starts to perfunctorily jerry-build awful botches of stuff and calls them artwork. This doesn't work.

1. "Digital tools are not being used as intended in favor of making great music". - Yes, digital tools don't restrict you, they don't force you to make bad music. "Technologies and DAWs killed music" is very loud words. It's arguable and it's very easy to beat you by your own words. I don't need to do it as you've beaten yourself by them.

2. Doesn't the great music exist? No, it still exists. And I disagree that the table of music styles is a pile of shit. If we make ourselves more specific (that is, if we listen to concrete tracks) we'll find that there are not bad ones (or may be perfect ones) among them.

All the things cannot be perfect or excellent because... Because when all the things are perfect or excellent NOTHING is perfect nor excellent. The absolute and universal perfectness is the new middle level, the new commonplace, the new mediocrity.

Making the good music is the single thing we can. But what means "good"? I think every musician, composer etc. express his/her comprehension what music is. Intentionally or not, it isn't important. He/she copies, repeats what he/she considers being good. May be, invents but this is a rare thing. Yes, there are many deaf people around us but they just express their comprehension of the music. Just express your own one too. If you need it.

3. One thought off topic. I wanted to say it you. The more rules we have the more we are free.

quote by foster911Technology and in particular DAWs killed the music

Always the same old song ... the prehistoric 1st man (or first woman) who used something other than his voice (or his body) to make music, used a new technology

This isn't true!

Technology must be used in the right way not as being used today. As an example:
Music must have a strong sense of direction. Technology-users' music are static and never sensibly evolve.

"must" and "right way" in the same sentence speaking of art usually don't get in favor of creation ...
