Softube Transient Shaper v2.5.9-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 2021.01.05 | 15.97 MB
Transient shaping has become a vital technique in music mixing. The abilities to sharpen or soften the onset of a sound and to lengthen or shorten the decay have been very useful for giving each sound just the right size and position in the mix.

Transient Shaper takes this concept one step further, by letting the user affect either the entire frequency range — which is what most similar tools do — or the treble frequencies or bass frequencies individually.

Thanks for the detailed information, I was going to ask how it stacks up to the others. What do you think about SPL Transient Designer, how does that one compare? I learned on it so it has a special place in my heart. Yeah, Voxengo makes some great plug-ins. Russian developer by the way.

SPL Transient Designer is rather deficient in setting capabilities, and also showed -1.03 dB drop in gain after rendering which could not be compensated with 'output gain' control. It is not quite linear too, with a fixed +0.5 dB peak @ 8.5 Khz.
Voxengo Transgainer is more precise, a bit less blurred and with slightly more pronounced transients.
SPL Transient Designer is very well done, though, measures very well on all tests, and can be rather compared with Oeksound Spiff. Those two are pretty close, but I did not have enough time to compare them yet.

Thanks for looking into it and for the in depth explanation. Really useful in deciding what's better to use. I think I'll give Voxengo Transgainer a try. We need more of these types of comments on posts. Imagine how much better everyone's experience could be. This would even be a good idea for an AudioSex thread. A comparison of the best tools for a particular function. I've got some new ideas for new threads which would add value to the forums that I'm playing around with, I think I'll add this to my list as well.

I did compare Oeksound Spiff and SPL Transient Designer, and SPL showed clearer sound, more detail and better definition. Spiff sounded a bit compressed, with added brightness not stemming from the original and slightly smudging the ambience.
I then added to test Eventide Punctuate and Slate FG-X.
Slate fared worst of them all by far, sounding shallow, turbid and incompact.
Eventide was slightly better than Slate, but still rather turbid.
In the end, this is the list of my results (including earlier Test of Softube Transient Shaper), starting from best to worst:
1. Voxengo Transgainer
2. SPL Transient Designer
----------------------------- excellent
3. Oeksound Spiff
----------------------------- very good
4. Eventide Punctuate
----------------------------- mediocre
5. Softube Transient Shaper
----------------------------- bad
6. Slate FG-X.
----------------------------- very bad

This is brilliant work mate, thanks so much. I'm just finding my footing in all this so it really helps to have someone guide you through the process of choosing the best tools to make life easier, cutting through all the marketing hype. I'm sure many will find this incredibly useful, like I did.
