Nobody knows if the word comes from latin 'Hymn' like almost everything: 'hymnus' , but probably from Greek 'hymnos'; [ύμνος].

But, has nothing to do with religion , but is it simpler, means any song or chant that you do for any reason.

This word is a variant of "HYMEN" [υμένας], but the woman's 'hymen' with her virginity that will be broken in marriage, when a man breaks it, something is restarted, or rebind or re-linked, yes again, the word "RELIGION" means purely "RE-LINK", RECONNECT to something that was disconnected doing this way a connection.

For the ancient Greeks, if you sing, you connect your self to another thing, is it because they used too much for exalting heroes or ode in praise of gods. The time passed and we think that Hymns are only for religious ceremonies, so better use the composition: "Religious Hymn", that means, TRYING a new connection with God, remember the bible, when He Has disconnected of us, yes, we are trying a new 'Upload Reconnection' and we still can not connect, just see the world as it is. 'Christ' was just a Celestial E-mail message for us, again back to a parallel ancient Greece: 'Hermes' [Anggelós] or the similar Roman mythology: Mercury the messenger.

Remember Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' could be 'Hymn to Joy" is the same thing, means a CONNECTION to the ideals of freedom, peace and solidarity.

Nietzsche only forgave Socrates because he composed a hymn to Apollo on his deathbed, of course not because of the religious phenomenon, but purely by what Socrates dealt with music, which for Nietzche , music is worth a thousand religions.
