Blocking your host, daw, the eventual stand alone app. and anything that could connect the software to the net is the first step to avoid timebombs or crack detection. On W7 once you learn how to create and outbound rule in the system firewall, it's pretty easy to "isolate" the software and you don't really need another firewall solely for this purpose.

Music developers use time-bombs by intentionally hiding a piece of code (usually hard to find) inside a dll. file that will set off a malicious function when specified conditions are met, thus executing whatever task it is programmed to do. Such as:

i) the program will stop functioning after a predetermined date or time is reached.
ii) the code uses your internet connection to call the manufacturer's site (your program gets disabled),
iii) the program does not get disabled, but it begins to crash, cannot use certain functions or save precepts etc.
iv) Sometimes, the sounds and functions surprisingly remain the same, but when you play a key, the note assignment will become quasi random. Worst of all, the GUI might darken and become inoperative (Uhe Zebra).

Urs Heckmann from Uhe and Marcus Fein from Tone 2 are famous for this.

Dealing with the time bomb! Not much you can do here. The code (inside the dll.) stores references to its own files in your Windows registry so that it can automatically launch the time bomb every time you start up your computer. You might try preventing the keys and values associated with the time bomb from infecting your registry. You can do this by using the file exclusion device in Windows Firewall, or better, don't use an internet computer. The software, however, in spite of what you do, will remain unstable until the code is cracked and the time bomb removed.

PS: UHE DEMO. Zebra 2 provides fifteen minutes before the time bomb begins triggering random notes, which are carefully engineered to make your life impossible (courtesy of Urs Heckmann). Some folks here think you can do "serious production" by just restarting the demo after it times out (see comments below). In spite of being fully functional for fifteen minutes, the Zebra demo is just "a toy program" giving you enough time to see if you wanna buy it. Nothing else! Imagine being on a tight schedule doing time-coding in multitrack format for a video trailer and having just fifteen minutes to get your act together (i.e. get inspired, select preset, tweak knobs, adjust parameter volume, run a third party plugin, using VCF, XMF filters, oscillators and modules, setting the arpeggiator, routing things to the main buses and effect houses, adding music to the selected spot on the time line etc.). Get it? All this will have to be done in fifteen minutes before your work is being sent into oblivion (even superman won't have a chance here). The DAW might freeze too! KVR users report that occasionally the notes on Zebra might go out of tune while on demo mode - even before the fifteen minutes time out (confirmed by Urs Heckmann). Anyone thinking that a demo can accomplish all thIs in fifteen minutes (or less) lives in Alice in Wonderland.

Very simply said: A .dll is an executable file like any other .exe, usually it contains a number of exported functions so other applications can call them. But nothing keeps the developer from including additional "internal" code to perform internet access or any other activity permitted under the context in which the dll is called.
You can even run a dll using "rundll32.exe" e.g. to open a URL like this:
rundll32.exe url.dll,FileProtocolHandler "www.myserver.com/?user=pereira&serial=12345"
By the time the browser has opened the URL, the data could have been logged on the server already.

By making use of your hosts file.

Like I said above, no home calls so no need to go mad with hosts & co if you're not used to it.
If you know how to easily edit an host file and it's not trouble for you, try that too
but keep in mind you're only doing some sort of voodoo that have no confirmation in real world.


Smart and well done, w/o performance hit or anything bad. Don't put Tone2 and U-He on the same league, whole different philosophy here. Tone2 is just a scumbag. U-he is not for sure.

An advice? If you want a 100% working version, just buy it. It's worth the money.

Now that would be BAD if you are in a middle of a GREAT recording aka you PLAY on your midikeyboard NOT write little lines on the Pianoroll with a virtual pen (like 98% of all dance music makers do)
So if Zebra starts to piip or whatever it does to go back to Demo mode after 15 min then you have to start all over again and that recording might not be as good as the first one..

I know that you can continue recording but exactly like with guitars you need to have a great sound to make a good performance you can do it with a crappy sound (like no sound at all) but most people tend to do it better when they have a good sound
