I find Waves plugins not being a strain of any kind on my CPU anyway. It's really hard to see a point there especially at that price point [rather buy more powerful PC]. If we're talking U-he plugins like Diva, though... that would be worth... a more powerful PC again. :)

Don't get fooled by off-processing, ever. You can always buy a much cheaper PC that can do that "off-processing" and if you use Reaper it is possible to network as many PCs as you want in a DSP network if your projects are *that* demanding.

Good points, I think this is a very useful tool for live sound applications foremost. I remember the old and highly overpriced Waves DSP boxes (APA 32 and 44 M) >shudders<, Still if a person has/uses a lot of Waves plugins and is either about to build/buy a new setup to replace an old one or has an old one for DSP farming already then it could be useful I suppose but yeah it is overpriced.
Most friends and people I know seem to go for VSL Vienna Ensemble PRO (Its at version 5 at the moment if memory serves me) along with their DAW of choice on a separate machine, Using Vienna Ensemble Pro for the CPU crushers and especially so if they use big ROMplers such as VSL's own, EastWest, loads of KONTAKT libraries and BFD with all or most of the expansions. It isn't something I personally need but when I've worked with friends and other people running that setup it has always been rock solid stability wise and automatic PDC takes care of itself extremely well. Still that is or can be a pricey setup as they tend to have a lot more of a beefy machine for VSL Vienna Ensemble PRO than their DAW machine (which makes sense in such a setup). The Ensemble PRO processors and effects are really good quality too. Still that said if I ever did need to start using such a setup I'd definitely start with REAPER first myself as it is far more cost effective and as powerful as one wants/needs it to be. Nice one SineWave, Sound advice/wise words dude
