ok. i didnt say better than guitar rig5. anyway, ever heard of the word LePou ?

once you dig them, you'll never use podfarm, only for monitoring

once you start to use impulse loaders as cabsims, you stop using ik/gr5/podfarm.
they just sound mediocre after them, of course maybe you like mediocre sounds.

tip : just use podfarm for monitoring, record dry (input channel 3,mono). then put the lepou headsim(s) and the cabinet loader. internet is full of IR's. best : redwirez.

As a guitarist and no techno dude that wants to use a distortion amp i say this one is ok nothing more.
Could be useful on some tracks but nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

As for Le Pou and Acmebar and Nick Crow and all other free vst amps sim well some of the dist amps are ok some decent sound but no more.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Guitar Rig? well thats really suck for guitarist their marshall amp sounds nothing lika a marshall and that goes for the orange and many more amps aswell

Amplitube? some good sounds especially the fender amps are good..

They have the manufactor name on some Amp sim but i only think it is for making money as some doesnt sound anything like the real thing.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Pod farm? i got the almost the whole package only lacking some bass amps

Since i own a POD XT hardware i got version 1 for free and then i bought the 2.5 version

I say some amps are really good especially the marshalls vox ac 15 and the hiwatt but some are just crap and some are ok some of the effects are really good especiallty the wha wha.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Softube amp room have a decent sound no more the same goes for metal room.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Overload well there is some good sounds on some amps.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Studio devil ok nothing more.

But nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

Jamvox this is not a good amp sim i think it sound horrible.
With all the effects on it is ok but take them away? then it sounds bad.

The best amp vst in MY (see this is so personal exactly like synths are for you synth players) opinion is Revalver noone even come near that baby when it comes to sound like a REAL amp especially the Peavey of course.

Thats a fact all other are way behind..
Even though the Marshall and the Vox sims is not good and the Buddha?

(hey come on a Buddha? a boutique amp that a vsti shall mimic? no way it is that good i have never heard one in real life but if it sounds like that i cant believe people pay 2000$ or more for that amp) ..

And the fact that you can design your own amp from scratch with different tubes and tonestack are just cool so you can have the sound you want..

But even on Revalver nothing i cant dial in on any other vst amp sim.

I am pretty sure other people might think different..

As someone like Vox amps (i hate them) not sims real amps
Someone like Marshall i grew up with that sound and i love that early 70s Marshall sound

And someone like those modded Marshalls like Soldano etc etc..

And someone like Boogie i like them and i want one but cant afford one

And nowadays many like Engl and Hughes and Kettner Bogner etc etc o it is all up to whatever taste you got.

So my point is no vst amp sim is best as i can tell you now that almost all sound very similar when you take away the effects in the patches..
And some sounds really BAD when you take away the effects.

I did do a test some time ago

I recorded a track with a simple A-chord i did a simple strum pattern on one track then i copy that track to many tracks and then inserted all amp sims that i have in my vst folder onj each of the tracks.

And put in their respective Marshall Fender Mesa etc etc they say they can emulate no bloody effects or any other thing that could change the pure amp sim tone..

At first i put all the tone and knobs on 12 o clock so it should be as fair as possible.

But the Amps was so different in volyme and sound that it wasnt fair at all.

So thats when i noticed how some (well most) manufactors are trying to make the amp sounds better then it really is on the default settings.

I.e more dist, more high end eq, etc etc

Then when i took away that from all amp sims they all sounded very very similar to eachother except for some that dont sound good at all in the pure settings Jamvox is one Guitar Rig another one..

That dont goes for POD Farm Revalver and Softube and Overload.
They all sound very nice in the default settings but some was more distorted the the other and some sounded darker etc.

But the basic tone was there

So then i tried to DIAL in a tone that is very similar on every ampsim and i can say i came very close on most of them.

Some i could not even tell which was which.

On some i had to dial very little to come close to the other amp and on some i had to dial very much especiall the Jam Vox Guitar Rig

So dont believe what you hear in the first place as you can dial in good tones on most amp sims but they NEVER will sound as good as a real amp miced up.

+1 wink

Very nice thread. I really like to read comments about these guitar related plugs.

My 2 euro: I think Kuassa made a decent job with both this and Creme. Even though it's not spectacular I think you can get sounds that work very well in a mix.
Years ago I had a Zoom 9000 that I used on lots of recordings, loved the sounds in that one. Unfortunately it got lost somewhere in the river of time. Now I'm just trying to put some virtual stuff together that might sound as good to me as that little plastic box did.

As it seems that this article tends toward more and more users technical info, experiences,... about Guitar Amps (both 'Virtual' and 'Real' ones)
as it progresses, maybe some of you could be interested by the following Book (in .'PDF' format).
Even if it's focused on 'real' Amps, maybe it can be a great source of knowledge for some Guitarists out here (e.g. by making some comparisons with their 'Virtual' counterparts, when available). yes

DAW,
Strangeness... the PDF is just fine for me (on mac with Adobe Reader 11.0.03).

Studio 555,
Thanks man, nice stuff.
Only problem is that it makes me crazy hot for some real gear :)

@ DAW & Thisis theend,

You're welcome mates ! mates
and is exactly what I thought when I was written my previous comment.
It's such really an invaluable source for some Guitarists
(and other musicians, sound engineers,... as well !). yes

@ DAW,

Adobe Reader says the pdf inside is " corrupted ". Any help welcome, this book looks very interesting !

Rather strange, because as is the case for 'Thisis theend',
I don't get any trouble to open properly that '.pdf' Book !
I get all the 210 Pages comprised in this Book available...

If your trouble persists, I'll upload that Book (my proper version)
to a different Host (e.g. 'Solidfiles', 'Zippyshare',... ).
I'll just wait a next comment from you, and if you definitively can't get
one of these 3 '.pdf' versions (one by provided Host) open properly,
I'll upload it just for you... yes

@ Thisis theend,

Only problem is that it makes me crazy hot for some real gear :)

And what problem ! With some prices of more than $ 75,000 wow for some 'Dumble' Amp Models, you'll even end more than simply crazy,
you'll also end up ruined !!! rofl

Real Gear over VSTI guitar stuff any day. a good head & a cab with celestial vintage 30's and your good to go

That being said if forced to use VST amp sim the Rockbox from Plugin Alliance is the best thing i have ever heard
simulater wise and i had a chnace to mess with the ENGL plug in they do (only axx at the moment) thats pretty good too

But when recording at home i still use an old Line 6 pod updated to v2.0 ( i picked up for 50 bucks) and send that recorded signal to a guitar buss with AP's shred Spread and wah la
a monster tone!
The light at the end of the tunnel just may be you.

Guitar sims are fun and offer lots of 'exciting' patch names but nah they are even worse than Line 6 modelling IMO. Learn how to mic a real amp and nothing will better it.

i use a dedicated computer only for the ampsims and record in studio main computer, then you get all the cpu for the standalone soft and have a decent sound whathever is the soft!!!!
