The Formant Classic Advanced is an extended Donation Ware version of the "Formant Classic" Free Ware version based on the legendary Elektor Formant DIY (Do It Your self) synthesizer of 1977/78 . It is available as a standalone version and VSTi plugin version for Microsoft based computers.

Not so common, bro. This was published in Elektor magazine (in the Netherlands Elektuur at the time) as a DIY project in the 1970s. In those days keeping a synth in tune was hard because of "drift". It was all analogue even though extensive use was made of the 7400 series of digital chips. Building the thing took over a year and it cost ten times as much as the top of the line VSTs today like OmniSphere or a softsynth like Reason or DAWs like Pro Tools and Ableton Live. Running it was not a cheap matter, it consumed over 300 Watts and the more modules one added the higher that consumption. Here is an image of a fully expanded version: Formant Synthesizer
