Make Believe Studios Sontec MES-432D9D v1.1.5-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 04 Sep 2023 | 30.3MB
Based on the MES-432D9 utilized by some of the most demanding engineers in the world, this equalizer needs no introduction. Thanks to Metric Halo's revolutionary new State Space Model Extraction Process this equalizer is available digitally in a way that is true to Burgess's vision for the first time.

We are proud to have helped play a part in the legendary history that is Sontec.

This make crazy
Wanted to try this many months ago
GS guys say it is too close to HW.
Need to plugindoctoring this vs. T-Racks 432 emu

No it's not. It's simply impossible with any technology in the box now. Even VVKT not 1:1 to real deal.

Do you have the HW unit?

1:1 no i dont think so either but you can get 90% there honestly but no plugin will replace actual tubes, physical circuitry or transformer...matching a curve is easy
now the thing seems to impulses. they even have monitor impulses
you cant make krk rokits sound like my barefoot mm45's.. its impossible

Actually you can if it's an appropriate physical modeling. It's just it's a very hard task and you have to be an actual engineer(like David Gamble or Reimund Dratwa, or someone like them). Good example is DMG TrackComp. Just try Zener algo from this plugin and tell me it doesn't have "it".

VVKT is a terrible way to approach analog circuit simulation. It uses a linear technology (IRs) and tries to map multiple of them at various input gain. It's extremely ineffective and it's better to use component level simulation, which has been done for over 50 years, in other domains than audio.

It's not "impossible", the only problem is the required CPU resources to run such algos at real-time. Good devs can optimize it by only selecting the components that have an impact on the sound.

Acustica benefits from people not understanding how analog circuit simulation works, and puts on pretty GUIs with a lot of marketing to make you believe their technology is superior. People thinking that it sounds better are just hearing their confirmation bias.

if you like EQ's doing really subtle things, this one is for you, and a little "bend / distorted." Great for mid-range boost. Another great recent mastering EQ here is the Pulsar's Massive..

Thanks R2R for making this dream come true. Finally will delete those sontec nebula libraries so cumbersome to use. God bless the internet.
Thanks for the share Decibelle.

I still feel Alex b’ sontec beats this by a good amount. Ofc one band at a time but honestly for mastering sometimes 1 band from a specific unit is all you need.

I'v just finish my blind tests.
I got full version of Alex B Sontec GE and Scarlet (latest update)

I curve match those three with EQ Curve Analyzer 2 (Bertom), freeze tracks in Reaper than normalize all to -23 LUFS-I

- Sontec MES-432D9D (Metric Halo) was very close to Acqua Scarlet. But Acqua got long ass after ring. Long tail after each kick drum. Obviously audible.
- Nebula library of Sontec EQ it's like a night and day. Highs are so pristine, the whole phase image of drums (i test ill drum set from SP1200) feels so organic and cohesive.

I'm not a fan of Alex B. He is an egoistic idiot in many things. His library's (even GE) have tons of VVKT sampling issues. It's just Nebula - pure raw uncut dopeness.

Please try it yourself. Compare with absolutely no bias. Blindly on the short loop with exact same LUF-I.

4 all Nebula haters:
If you got slow CPU - when will be that day that you update your computer and stop blaming the world for your problems.

Why don't you post your examples so that people can judge for themselfs?

Btw.. Nebula is a crappy software. My 16 core CPU can handle 'em all, it's not about that.
Crappy UI/GUI and buggy software.. also crappy support. Bugs aren't fixed. Some EQs sounds OK but the compressors just sucks.
Not worth it by a long shot (but I'll gladly be proven wrong).

But you can prove us otherwise. Link us to your examples and let us to the blindtests.

VVKT is a cumbersome attempt to model with more details analog sound operations modifiers, "the material aspect", the "component physical identity imprint" but to most people (and I know for sure this ain't an argument in itself) the tradeoff is still unreasonable, even if this can evocate sometimes this kind of "analog sparks" when treating sound. But yeah sometimes it gives this "realness" smile, but never ended to me other than a bulky gimmick.

Actually if AA plugs would be smooth to use and to authorize half of the story would be solved.

I think this reason is why AA is defended by quite withdrawn, inter-se individuals "praising" a.. tech ? Some remarkable sound sometimes but a wrecking ball of responsibilities and constrains to be chained to... not for me.

And I always think it ends up sounding more "like everyone who bought the same plugin" ironically as it fights specifically against it and pretend to have its "own" identity. And yeah it sounds static, mushy, well, cumbersome tech. But remarkable work anyway. I respect the effort. But meh.

STN and RTN will tear the giancarlo guy for real and he knows it and I bet he's already sweating by large drops and stakes on his most faithful clients.

I feel they improved the AA plugins a lot on the latest updates in therms of usage and user experience ( I mean being using just el rey and diamond lift cannot say about the rest). But not Nebula. Unfortunately

Anyone checked for aliasing artifacts in this one? From their documentation they have omitted oversampling from this one which would maybe indicate a warm and fuzzy feeling without aliasing distortions?
  Member 28.11.2016 971

run at 96k like clever people to avoid (audible) aliasing in ALL plug-ins!
  Supplier 10.01.2021 1 123

I wouldn’t go as far as saying in all plugins. Infact 96k probably still can’t get rid of all audible aliasing. Especially with higher harmonic distortion.

Oversampling is not only for avoid or reduce aliasing. But also for Nyquist area at highs
.
  Member 25.05.2023 7 156

It's more for phase distortion from oversampling filters, or for pre-ring if those filters are lin-phase.

Try it yourself:
- Print one file 96 or 192K without OS, second with your "working samplerate" with OS turned one.
- Gain match exact same LUFS-I both (no even 0.1 dB difference)
- Loop half of the bar (important not compare long music parts to avoid any bias)
- Fast A/B flip between that audio files - BLINDLY!

You will be shocked by results.
  Resident 2.02.2014 1 2647
+1455
Yeah , because all eqs with their own oversampling algos may have different quality.
And to gainmatch them you need same sample rate, one for high sample rate (original), second with lower one, but then upsampled to match sample rate. Otherwise, not proper test, your DAW will automatically upsample file with low sample rate.

You don't need oversampling to avoid cramping.
  Resident 2.02.2014 1 2647
+1455
If it is already solved internally, then not. But in some eqs you need use oversampling to avoid cramping. Voxengo as example, DDMF IIEQ pro digital mode and many other eqs. If you use high sample rates, then you don't need it, or 2x for safety.

Yes. There is a bit of cramping in the highs when using the high band. High shelves do not appear to have any cramping however
  Resident 2.02.2014 1 2647
+1455
Yeah. There are two problems. Cramping and decramping.... Decramping is solved in frequency area almost, but not in phase.... Phase might be in wrong area.... Read articles and watch measurements on vladgsound site....

Shelves yeah.... More transparent than cut filters in phase domains...

Tested it. Unfortunately this thing does *not* sound like a true Sontec EQ. (indeed i have worked with the real deal in the past)
The sound of this plugin is "flat and sterile" and does not come "alive" in the way and manner the real analog hardware handles it.
