The most complete passive EQ plugin. Musical and intuitive, a must-have for mixing and mastering.

A DIFFERENT EQUALIZING EXPERIENCE
Pulsar Massive is an emulation of the Manley Massive Passive* EQ that is present in almost every mastering studio in the world. This machine was designed as a synthesis of the best passive equalizers of the last 70 years, and several distinct features in the design give it an absolutely unique sound.

First of all, the fully parallel topology of the EQ gives completely different kind of response to a digital equalizer with the same settings. A parallel equalizer’s tonal corrections aren’t cumulative, but tend to interact with each other, resulting in a more intuitive and fluid way to shape the frequency spectrum.

As well as this, the whole equalization circuit of the original hardware is passive, and therefore has several inductors. These inductors, machined and wound specifically by the manufacturer, are responsible for a creamy, non-linear and organic sound due to the magnetic saturation they introduce.

Finally, the input, output, and internal gain stages are entirely tube and transformer operated, providing another step of warm and organic coloration.

Our software meticulously reproduces all these important aspects of the original hardware, but also offers an interface inspired by its ergonomics, which were much appreciated by its users.

But we’ve taken Pulsar Massive even further, adding all the key features you would expect from a modern, versatile EQ plugin, including visual curve editing for a fast workflow and a drive parameter to push the inductor and tube saturation stages harder for more vibe.

This one was an instant purchase from me. Had a great price for owning MU but pulsar has been in my top 3 devs for plugins I use. This one is amazing.

I'd say Pulsar Audio is among my top list of plugin developers, too, along with PSPaudioware, Brainworx, Tokyo Dawn Records... & a few others. I'm certainly looking forward to trying this parallel/passive EQ, but time will tell whether it makes it to my shortlist of go-to EQ's...

HUGE Thanks R2R and DECiBELLE

Yeah, agree, they're great. I've only briefly looked at the walkthrough but already wish that Steinbug took some lessons in how to make digital eq more functional. Maybe one day their (fiddly af, unclear) stock eq could behave like this one (autogain, knobby visual feedback, ease of use etcs) stop "wasting" an input.
Thx to anybody posting Spitfire / OTB libs!

Haha I used to love the look of 'Steinbug's' (pre SX!) stock plugins, way back in the day
I agree, they could definitely use a facelift with some workflow improvements. & Yeah, I know, PSP plugins are not the easiest to look at due to their aged GUIs :') but it's how they sound, right? ;)

Can i install it next to legit pulsar plugins?

Yes. I have no problems using it with my legit Mu and Smasher. Come to think of it, I should probably install R2R's versions instead for faster loading and less memory usage.

Despite 1178 being buggy af, Pulsar (and weirdly Pulsar Modular, too, for ruining things nicely) are great! Bit of a waste of their time doing an EQ?

Thanks R2R & DECi!

Just curious what bugs you've encountered with 1178? I've not run into one yet, and I use it pretty often.

I agree with you that this plug-in doesn't seem to be at the same level of functionality that Pulsar's plug-ins usually are. I guess it's more of a compliment to their Mu compressor.

IMO, TDR Slick EQ Mastering Edition does everything, and much more, that a Massive Passive inspired EQ should do, and to beat it will require so much more than we see here. We can't expect every new EQ released to be reinventing the wheel though ;) This can certainly be the perfect mastering EQ for someone!

Well, it's mainly using it w/ Cubase; so it's likely Steinbug related? =) (Haven't tried it in other DAWs; guessing you have?) But it crashes whenever you bypass or turn it off (sidechained).

I'll defo check out slick eq, but I love the (to me a new idea!) having the knobs and graph be linked, which should be adopted by all devs! Esp PSP, who insist on the stupid flipping things! I like having drive and auto-gain in an eq, but that's prolly not novel? Makes "fiddling around" (bad workflow =) a bit easier.

Isn't the movement of knobs and graph always linked, anyway? Or do you mean having the knobs in line with each selected band on the graph?
I would welcome a facelift for PSP, or having them skin-able.

I mean, the in-line thing is another cool workflow / gui improvement, and stereo et al links. But it seems standard to have either / or with knobs and graph; even w/ TDR EQs you can't click on the graph. TDR is slightly annoying if you always want the graph to appear (ie have lots of screen estate.) Otherwise, great!

I can't recall anything except (annoying) floaty, unreadable knobs in Fabfilter; or just generally. I like the idea of having fine control with knobs, although it's annoying you don't have good control of teh q (?) in Massive :( I like the way it works with "overlapping" boost / cut, and the sort of "predictive" nature works well, up to a point. I rly want uber-narrow q most of the time, not rly a thing here? (I should RTFM! =) Love the way you can drive it to the max, tho!

I know what you mean regarding Fabfilter and it's invisible / temporary, floating, hard-to-read knobs that could definitely do to be clearer. & I also dislike this approach, but it does have the advantage of reducing clutter. I do prefer to see the controls for all bands at once and have the visual feedback, like we have here with Pulsar Massive. However, I think I prefer SlickEQ M due to it being 6-band + HP/LP (not to mention its per band mid/side control and countless other useful features!)

If it's Q control you're after, look for the plugins that are less aimed at mastering. and more for surgical control TDR Nova GE has a tonne of control, but it's got that thing of only being able to see one band of knobs at a time. (It would be pretty messy to have that lot repeated 4,5, or 6 times, not to mention take up copious amounts of screen space!). MasterQ2 does have Q knobs, as long as you don't mind the retro GUI.

If you like the GUI in Massive but would like higher Q values Slick EQ M is definitely something you should check out. It's quite similar to Massive, but with 6 bands, more filter shapes, individual stereo width and pan for each band, individual saturation for lows and highs, low frequency mono control, and much more. Check out this introduction video with Dan Worrall: Slick EQ M video

Thanks, watched the (everyone's fave voice) Dan Worrall vid, looks like they included a baffling (aka amazing =) amount of features in an EQ! I just dl their whole suite, because they're excellent developers; guys I hadn't rly even heard of! Everything I wanted in Massive (and more) included!

In case someone is wondering what's the thing with passive eq: they're parallel eqs and sound a bit different when doing extreme processing. So is TDR Nova. You can get the exact same effect with pro-q by using just a single band, and use as many instances as you need bands (one band per instance). However, in normal mastering situations use whatever EQ and you won't hear any difference

Don't forget VOS Slick EQ and Slick EQ M! They are also parallel :)

it should emulate a Pultec, passive because it cuts even when boosting, how silly this concept is in the digital domain. Don't forget the dip, otherwise is not pulting.

Passive eqs don't necessarily mean they have parallel bands topology.
Passive design gain is compensated by an outpout stage amp unlike the active per band gain. In the Massive ,it happens to be both cases. In a hardware unit this design greatly reduces noise and imperfections buildup

I like this EQ, but I already own Tokyo Dawn Slick Mastering EQ, which seems superior to me in featureset and design.

Uhmmm they are 2 different eq.
Superior or inferior is only a taste of matter of the sound..and needs…

With the massive passive you do a creative eq, more in a musical way, only the inputs and outputs giving a special color to the sound…

“ First of all, the fully parallel topology of the EQ gives completely different kind of response to a digital equalizer with the same settings. A parallel equalizer’s tonal corrections aren’t cumulative, but tend to interact with each other, resulting in a more intuitive and fluid way to shape the frequency spectrum.

Finally, the input, output, and internal gain stages are entirely tube and transformer operated, providing another step of warm and organic coloration.”

Enought to me to use it after my Fabfilter pro Q ;)

Surgical+musical :)
