There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can't give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it.

For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain 'push' to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff.

Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours.

Nice update. This does have its place in a mix on some elements, but I have the "original" and while this can get close in some instances, overall there is no comparison to the capabilities and sound of the hardware.

100 % agreed. Not the same distortion characteristics, not the same ratios.

Did you compare the real thing to their ( Empirical Labs' ) " Arousor " plugin ?

Yes and I think Arouser can be great on a lot of things once you get it dialed in properly, but still not nearly as versatile and missing some of that special sauce character the "original" oozes in spades.

SkNote Disto is the closest to 'my' hardware...i have 4 Distressor units in my rack and none of them sound identical to each other... very close but vary a bit as hardware does. SKnote did a killer job on his EMU Kush is great too. not a fan of Arouser, to me it sounds flat, but to each his own

Not a fan of the Arousor also. Nice to hear from someone with the hardware because to my ears the SKnote sounds great on vocals.
How close would you say is the Sknote to the hardware?
Did you use Disto v1 or v2 for your comparisons

i use both versions, but if i had to choose one i would prefer the original V2 for its options. love the old V2 ,but Disto S is good aswell... saturation on these EMUs are killer

I read that the question was not intended to me, but I found that article on Reverb :

" SKnote Disto-S : Simply the best emulation of a classic. Fantastic on drums, versatile on everything. " is what claims the dev...

You mean the articles on Reverb ?
Or on Gearspace ?
Or in magazines (SOS etc) ?

At the bottom on this Reverb one about the Distressor, you'll find comments by users / buyers / readers. But the good starting point here is the " History ", as for the other classic gear there is to sell there.
