apulSoft apUnmask is an audio plugin to amplify components of the audio that are psychoacoustically masked by other components.

To achieve this, apUnmask uses parts of the detector algorithm of the opus high-quality audio compression codec. Signal components that would get removed by compression are extracted. These can normally not be heard as they are masked by louder components in time and frequency. apUnmask enables amplifying and sculpting the masked content and adding it to the music.

To shape the frequencies of the extracted signal, it is fed through a linear phase graphical equalizer. It features a bezier curve smoothed frequency response without overshoot.

The result is a form of hyperrealistic audio. The process helps the listener to hear more aspects of the music at the same time. apUnmask can be used as a mastering effect or as an intelligent exciter for single instruments

Normally lossy audio compression just removes things. Decades of research have lead to clever algorithms to detect what can be taken away without the listener noticing - all to save on data size. Using apUnmask you can now use this research power to your benefit, extract and amplify those signals and help the listener's ears to hear more.

SUGGESTED WORKFLOW
Insert apUnmask on the master track or an individual track to be enhanced.
Adjust the master gain until a reasonable amount of delta signal is visible.
Toggle the delta listen button to hear the "ghostly" sound what would be removed by the opus codec. This is what normally lives in the shadows of your music.
Experiment with the resolution knob to find the most interesting components.
Tweak the eq curve to extract and boost the good stuff.
Turn off delta listen and enjoy the result.

A very efficient tool to undo some of the psychoacoustic filtering of mp3 lossy encoding standard.

this is not what this thing does. you're not processing mp3s to restore them. you use the plug on wavs to extract the info that is normally lost by a lossy encoding and you can manipulate/mix/blend that info back into the source. at least that's how I understand it. not sure how useful something like this can be but a clever idea nonetheless.

"Undoing some of the psychoacoustic filtering of mp3 lossy encoding standard" did not imply in any way processing the mp3s directly, but using the plugin after decoding them to WAVs, of course (there is no other way, anyway). I did not mention any 'restoring' of mp3s, or targeting them as a final result, but rather had in mind saving the improved files to some lossless format.

Well, good luck with that too!
You can't pull out of an mp3 what doesn't exist.
Nanook was correct in saying we use this on wav prior to any export to a lossy compression codec.
This is explained in the blurb.

Sentence underlined :
I'm not sure but I suppose FinalMaster was writing about some sort of exciter effect from this plugin, with synthesized harmonics.

Aphex Aural Exciter, Behringer SX3040, etc. The accoutumance to the effect - and so exaggeration - makes it a tool to avoid ( AFAIC ).

But for sure FinalMaster can answer himself. Oups sorry for the interruption, I saw some light, I came in .
' It's because the speed of light is greater than that of sound that so many people appear brilliant until they open their mouth ... '

Heavily compressed and some filtered (band gain reduced, depending on slope) parts of the original signal still exist in mp3s, one just has to detect them where and when possible, and increase their gain accordingly.
[The high end can be synthesized by extrapolation; de-filters, de-clippers and de-quantizers can also be used, etc., but it does not pertain to this plug-in]
Of course, you can not get a fully reverse-engineered WAV out of mp3, but one can master a WAV from it that is more or less more similar to the original. (A bit like colorizing a b&w photograph, you can not get the original colours, but the ones somewhat resembling them).
Remember, analogue recordings from 1920-1950s contain typically less information than a mp3@320 kbps file encoded from a modern WAV, but still get restored and remastered successfully.

I totally got what you were implying in the first place.
But still, this plugin isn't meant for that.
It supposedly helps the full-rate audio, prior to any lossy conversion, by emphasising the parts that would usually get taken away when it becomes an mp3.

Bad analogy. The vinyl, in this case, was the source format. With as much information on it that they could get.
Mp3, not the source, has been through a haircut and a castration, plus has added artifacts if you're unlucky. Which you may then enhance.
Probably easier to restore the vinyl, imo. It's all relative to the medium.

Whereas the plugin which is your namesake IS for the purpose you posit.

are there any creative applications for this plugin?
