Stereo double compressor. On each channel: an optical compressor followed by a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) compressor (Discrete). The first one controls the average signal level with the typical electro-luminescent panel musical behavior. The discrete one controls peaks, adding snap or full control.

Three optical models, based on measurements on several ELP (electroluminescent panels) and LDR (light dependent resistors) couples.

Three transformer models, from clean to quite dirty.

Mid/Side encoding and decoding matrix. Full control on stereo image with two sides processing Mid and Side components separately.

Great and versatile for mixing on all kinds of sources, extremely useful and effective for mastering.

the PA version is far more superior. But you can play with this for a while.

plugins are good but harware killer in both ways quality and value.

Own this one and demoed extensively every emulation of Shadow Hiils Comp.
Unfortunately nothing doesn't sound as a 10 grants unit.
Having said that i don't have experience with hardware but boy those are way off of what i would call a holly-grail in mastering compression.

not holy-grail at all. in fact you can only find it in some mastering studios, usually the posers who don't know what they're doing and showing off with a bunch of expensive gear. you won't find it in any A-list mastering engineer's chain. in fact an A-list mastering guy, which I respect a lot, told me he found the HW pretty much unusable. it's a weird unit. could be useful for mixing but mastering not really - so don't blame the emulations when the HW is an odd duck.

Ich hatte Probleme mit dem Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, den ich jahrelang be-nutzt habe. Mir schien, dass die Bassdrum durch die RΓΆhrenschaltung Punch verliert. Mitt-lerweile benutze ich ihn nicht mehr, stattdessen verwende ich den Dangerous Music Compressor. Der bietet zwar nicht die gleiche WΓ€rme, denn der Shadow Hills liefert tolle WΓ€rme im Mittenbereich. Aber es hat mich frustriert, die Trennung zwischen Bass und Bassdrum zu zerstΓΆren. Diese Dynamik mΓΆchte ich nicht verΓ€ndern, ich mag nicht, wenn der Bassbereich undefiniert wird. Die Klangfarbe gefiel mir allerdings sehr.

SHMC is a pair of la3a clones followed by a ssl clone. with 3 sets of output transformers clean sunset sound, neve, api. hp filter for ssl comp is at 90? cant remember. got rid of it soon. if you want a clean option for an ssl type of comp cause noone uses the opto anyways in that unit, the dmg trackcomp is the perfect emulation. this is a bad clone of a bad clone.
