That's kind weird... you would think the single band version is what CM would have, and the multi-band version is what would be available direct from Acustica.

(The last free Acustica plugin from CM was Pink, and it was a scaled down version of the product available direct from Acustica.)

Very pleased to see a fine Acustica product here. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for sharing.

If anyone here has some experience with this plugin, please do Chime in. I'd love to hear what other people are thinking about it.

That's what I was going to ask. Is this really just a plugin in a few formats? An unoptimized disc image? Lots of extras, demo files, tutorials? This is somehow bigger than many DAWs.

As said, acustica/nebula aren't normal algo plug-ins but have to look at a whole bunch of 'samples' (to simplify) then apply your audio to what their test audio did when passed through the hardware... a 3D lookup table of data...

TBH it's not worth it. THey have massive disc space needs, very CPU hungry, often buggy GUIS and also have many sound faults some hidden, some not, and can't distort properly nor compress properly vs algo.

Nebula's time came and went before it even got fully started. Algos these days are more than good enough with none of the drawbacks.

SKIP!

I will have to disagree with you there. I have been using all the top algo plugins religiously, and have advocated them as such. However, I have recently discovered Nebula and have all the available libraries. I have never been able to achieve such a warm and 3d sound with any algo plugin as well as I can with proper use of a few nebula libs. To be honest, The algo stuff, albeit great on its own, only further amplify the qualities of Nebula when used in conjunction with each other.

To sum things up, (no pun intended) Nebula is absolutely "the shiznit", when used correctly - for me, it's worth the hassle, ten fold.

I'm sure this multiband compressor is a cpu hog and all, but the sound that you can get out of it can be worth it to many "all-about-the-sound-freaks" out there, like myself.

Acustica plugins are sample model based, not circuit model based. Specifically, the Acustica engine uses a database of Volterra Kernels sampled from actual analog gear to create a signal that matches as close to possible to the sampled device.

Equalizers usually have the largest database sizes. Some of their EQ plugins are several gigs for one VST.

Compressors are usually much smaller, as the Volterra kernal database is only used for the original analog compressor's preamp. In this case, the PC VST version of Violet CM is ~150 megs. The archive also contains a PC AAX version, and both 32 and 64 bit VST versions for Mac, as well as AAX and AU versions for Mac (5 versions total).

Also, there is a separate database for 4 different sample rates (44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 khz), all present in all 5 versions.

If this was a 4 band EQ, there would be a separate database for each EQ band as well as the preamp, making the size closer to something like 5 gigs. :)

(I'm not sure exactly how the actual compressor modelling works, if it's circuit based or what... Acustica claims that it's proprietary.)

A few Acustica plugins also have "HQ" versions with sample databases that are twice as big as the normal ones. :)

PC:
AAX installer 147mb, VST installer 148mb

CPU heavy plugin. Does not past use test on older laptop. spits & sputters with one track running in Reaper. Most likely 2 to 3 times worse in Pro Tools.

Graphics not completely clear/clean.

Thanks anyway... Maybe next free plugin will work as expected, like past releases.

Thanx for posting this...
The ''ONLY'' problem is CPU..it starts overdosing...really intensive.
But thanx anyway

The sound of the valves is unique. The algoritms/databases are each day closer, but not quite there yet. Let's try this, thank you!

Long time Acustica Audio User here... >>> make sure the plugin is same buffer size as your DAW is set ;) or you will get spits and sputters /high CPU >>> to do this check DAW buffer size then go to where you installed this Acustica Violet plugin >>>with the plugin dll their will be an xml file for this plug >>>open the xml file in Notepad scoll down to where you see buffer size it will look something like this DSP Buffer <<<< 1024 >>>> change the number only to your DAW buffer size and hit save ;)

Ive not tested this Plug, but with it being Multi band im sure it IS a CPU eater like the other Multiband AA plugs lol... proper setup does help them run more efficient with correct buffer ;)>>> No doubt years ago i had to build a monster of a Machine to use all these AA plugs but the tone is just unmatched for my personal taste for me to lay them down lol... Sometimes other plugins from other Devs can cause them to stumble aswell... What i do is open Acqua plugs in Nebula because with Nebula you can tweak things to make them run smoother and im just a big fan of Nebula 3 and nebula 4 over the Acqua plugs ;) they sound no different just more ability to do tweaking for better DSP IMO,and you can do all this tweaking right there on the face of the Nebula plugin for convenience \m/

Their plugins are too heavy to use them at super fast (tracking) buffer rate. The crackling issue has to do with the buffer rate set directly within the DAW. Incrementally raise the buffer in your DAW from whatever the troublesome rate is to the next one up to find the lowest rate you can get away with for mixing with AA plugs. If the rate in your DAW is set at 32.. go to 64.. 128.. 512.. 1024.. until you hit the one your CPU can handle.. and the crackling will go away.

For mixing the buffer size is better set to maximum.
For tracking then yes, as low as possible without clicks, pops and dropouts.

Man... Thanks !! Great advice! Changing the dsp buffer in the XML has significantly reduced - maybe even took care of all the CPU spikes! Greedy plugin of course, but it is a mastering comp so one instance should do the trick! Going to check my other XML's now... !

JAYMZ...U Sir, are correct...but still. That's why I am putting aside Dinero for ''stronger comp''...but yeah, u are right

Forget these tales about "analog" feel or "valve sound" inside your PC. Open it as an insert in your DAW, generate sine wave, insert any metering plugin i.e. Blue Cat Oscilloscope. You wont beleive your eyes, but you can repeat all the tricks using free eqs and waveshapers and harmonic adders. Simply look and learn.

Yes but this plugin is also FREE and does all that additional trickery for you without having to think about it.
It seems like a no brainer to me.
Anyone worth their salt will understand that one can not create true analogue distortion/ eq/compression characteristic in the digital domain, only emulate.
Acustica are one of a very few that come close.
The focusrite liquid series was similar in concept and some of their emulations also sounded good.

Most of us are ok with 'close enough' because we can't afford all the hardware.
I think the point I'm trying to make is.. Use whatever works for you. And if it's free and simple, then even better.

So my understanding is, the Violet compressor itself is sampled from a Thermionic Culture Phoenix compressor. That is a single band compressor.

To make it multi-band, Acustica took the multi-band filter modelling that they used in Titanium, which is itself modeled after the Tube-Tech SMC 2B compressor.

So it's like a combination of the two. The multi-band from a Tube-Tech SMC 2B, and the compressors on each band from a Thermionic Culture Phoenix.

This thing sounds amazing. Heavy? Yes, takes 30% of my CPU, but I think it's worth.
Much different from all the other multiband compressors I generally use...

Thank you!
