ISSE : An Interactive Source Separation Editor Software WIN/OSX/LINUX [Free] screenshot
Developer: Nicholas J. Bryan | Last Update: Version 0.2.0 | 8.74 MB
In applications such as audio denoising, music transcription, music remixing, and audio-based forensics, it is desirable to decompose a single- or stereo-channel recording into its respective sources. To perform such tasks, we present ISSE - an interactive source separation editor (pronounced "ice").

ISSE is an open-source, freely available, cross-platform audio editing tool that allows a user to perform source separation by painting on time-frequency visualizations of sound. The software leverages both a new user interaction paradigm and machine learning-based separation algorithm that "learns" from human feedback (e.g. painting annotations) to perform separation. For more information, please see the about and demos sections of the website and the demo video below.

History

ISSE was developed by Nicholas J. Bryan as part of his PhD thesis, advised by Gautham J. Mysore at Adobe Research and Prof. Ge Wang of the Music, Computing, and Design Group (MCD) at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), Stanford University. In July 2013, it was released as an open-source project licensed by Adobe Research and Stanford University. Since then, several others have joined as advisors, collaborators, and developers.

Authors, Advisors, and Collaborators

Authors, advisors, and collaborators include:

Nicholas J. Bryan (inactive since 01/05/14),
Gautham J. Mysore, Adobe Research,
Ge Wang, Stanford University,
Paris Smaragdis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
Bryan Pardo, Northwestern University.
In addition, the software is heavily dependent on several fantastic third-party open-source libraries including JUCE, Eigen, and FFTW.

Publications

Technically speaking, the core separation algorithm used within ISSE is a machine learning separation method based on non-negative matrix factorization and related probabilistic methods. Over the past decade these methods have been found to be useful for a wide variety of music and audio-related tasks including source separation. For a list of relevant prior work, please see this link. For the specific technical contributions of this work compared to past research, please see the list below.

it looks incredible.

for sure many "amazing" vst plugin developers have used and abused the source code of this project, for making their "own" algorithms and plugins.

if only the top world developers, like uhe, arturia, melodyne, uad, and hundreds others, could start a collaborative project,
musicians all over the world could be making music with daws superior to cubase, live, logic, with the best features ever, along fantastic virtual instruments,
ALL for free.

but it's all about money, in this fking world, sadly.

thanks for this app, will give it a try.

i dont quite agree with you on that - its not that simple
its very very complicated to make software in machine code and takes alot of time, and dont forget their support (forums)

theres a lot of people involved in making software and its a full time job and they have to get a salary

you can see the difference with between magix spectralayers and then this simple one

i do agree that some apps are too expensive, but you can look at for example magix and celemony, they have to have many apps just to survive - they cant live of just one app - before magix, it was sony that owned spectralayers, theres no money in it for them

im not a precher and i do use cracked apps, but i do as the crackers say: if you really like it and use it alot - buy it (to support them making it even better)

but i also know theres developers that take too much money for it, like ableton, and notice theres even no support from them, but that could also have something to do with the so many illigal users of the app :-)

Thanks and a little suggest to olsonperrensen: will be good to announce in the post head some like "ISSE: An Interactive Source Separtation WIN/OSX/LINUX (FREE). Usually, if you dont make explicit that, it means "windows only"
Thanks so much to Nicholas J. Bryanand the people that enchances our sonic world with hard work and generousity.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. Title has been changed, now it contains the supported systems. Keep in mind I didn't include the Linux download files, so yeah, it's supported and you'll have to download it directly from the Developer's webpage.

Cheers!

Hi! What seems to be the issue? Please try to be precise with this. Which error are you getting?

ISSE cannot be opened because of a problem.

Check with the developer to make sure ISSE works with this version of macOS. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and macOS.

It might have to do with the newer macOS version. Yeah, this app was last updated on 2013-12-15.
