REQ: Nail The Mix Beau Burchell & SAOSIN

When it comes to post-hardcore, there is one band whose influence reaches beyond all others: Saosin. Their EP kicked off an entire genre, and while their sound has been imitated countless times there's just no substitute for the real thing!

With that said, we're incredibly proud to welcome producer + Saosin guitarist Beau Burchell to NTM to mix "The Silver String" from their latest album "Along The Shadow" - if you want to see how they work their magic in the studio, here's your chance!
Here's what's challenging + fun about this song (according to Beau):

The song has some really cool scene changes and the drums need to be able to morph from punchy rock drums to lush and roomy for the different sections. There are 2 sets of overhead mics, 2 sets of stereo room mics, and 2 mono room mics for you to experiment with.

The song needs to slam right from the first drum hit while still leaving room for the chorus to explode. This is especially difficult because vocals usually dictate the energy of the section, and the verse vocals are arguably more intense than the chorus vocals.

Saosin's drummer hits harder than anyone I've recorded. Usually this is a great thing. However, even with him playing lighter than normal, it forced me to use a much thicker / darker drum head than I would have preferred, so you will have to figure out a way to get some life out of the snare.
