The Daily Adventures of Mixerman screenshot
2009 | ISBN: 0879309458 | English | 440 pages | EPUB/PDF | 1 MB
Mixerman is a recording engineer working with a famous producer on the debut album of an unknown band with a giant recording budget. Mixerman is supposed to be writing about recording techniques, but somehow, through that prism, he has hit upon a gripping story. Like all great narratives, Mixerman's diary has many anti-heroes for whom we, the readers, can have nothing but contempt. The band consists of the four most dislikable human beings you can imagine. The singer is vain and pretentious. The guitarist is a serious depressive. The drummer is as "dumb as cotton," and the bassist is merely mean and petty, making him the only one that Mixerman can stand. All four of them hate each other's guts, and they haven't even been on tour yet. Mixerman takes you through the recording process of a bidding war band in over their heads with a famous record producer (also in over his head). Many find Mixerman's diary entries side-splittingly funny. Some find them maddening. And a select few feel they are the most despicable accountings of record-making ever documented.

I've read it twice, more than a decade ago. So entertaining, funny, true, and educative, too. Especially for musicians and those in the music business, of course. Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed!

Maybe you remember when it began and was unfolding as episodes (before he ever thought to make a book of it) on the Internet....2000, 2001 maybe? Eh, really can't say for sure. It was exciting and hilarious. People couldn't wait for next installment to either laugh or bitch.

It was a high point of Internet memories for me - hilarious in satirical accuracy and great mystery as to who the writer and players were. Generated a lot of ire too.

I'd recommend all of Sarafin's books. Whether or not you gather topically useful info for yourself or just enjoy his writing style. Good stuff.

I remember that!

It was around 2001-2002 on the Something Awful forums. Someone made bank selling an, 'I AM MIXERMAN' tee.

I remember it from a couple of years later when I picked up a TXT file from Dogs On Acid forum [I think]. Somebody was kind enough to compile all the episodes into a book and I think this is probably the same TXT just made as a proper book file. I will check it out one of these days to see if there is some additional stories, since I found it so hilarious and inspiring. And most importantly - the stories are true. It's not hard to believe it, because I witnessed similar things happen during my career. :)
