The Cambridge Companion to Schubert by Christopher H. Gibbs screenshot
English | Publisher: Cambridge University Press, 2006 | 356 Pages | epub+pdf (conv.) | 12 MB
This Companion to Schubert examines the career, music, and reception of one of the most popular yet misunderstood and elusive composers. Sixteen chapters by leading Schubert scholars make up three parts. The first seeks to situate the social, cultural, and musical climate in which Schubert lived and worked, the second surveys the scope of his musical achievement, and the third charts the course of his reception from the perceptions of his contemporaries to the assessments of posterity.

Myths and legends about Schubert the man are explored critically and the full range of his musical accomplishment is examined.

Happy to have lots of 'The Cambridge Companion' books.

But don't forget that there two other names linked to music and a must to read.
Nietzsche and Kant from 'The Cambridge Companion'.

Kant simply designed the way of thinking of all romanticism period, he defends the ABSOLUTE MUSIC, the music in his pure way, in a popular language: 'the instrumental music'.

All composers after 1801 still read Kant. Then one day 'Mendelssohn' said: Ok, that right, the music don't need to have lyrics like 'Schubert' did a lot, or text to explain the music, then I'll composed 'Songs without words', that is until today a master opus in music composition.
