Making your tracks perfectly levelled is essential to creating a great mix. The less dynamic your tracks are, the less problems you're gonna have in the later stages of the mix. But it's also important to preserve the dynamic range of your main tracks or the end result will sound lifeless.

When faced with a highly dynamic recording, what I love to do is get in there and adjust the spikes by hand, and then let my favorite early-stage compressor even it out.

It can leave out certain frequencies that have little competition in the other tracks, therefore letting my main track breathe more. It just sounds more natural. Whenever I need a quick fix I just insert this plugin and I'm instantly happy.

What I love most about Provoc Grader is its simplicity. Drag the frequency range selector vertically to widen or narrow down the range. Drag it sideways to move across the frequencies. Set the threshold, adjust the levels. You're done. Sure, you could just use a multiband, but a plugin like this could come in handy.
