I think there is a solution. I've tried creating a hard "symbolic link" w/c makes the computer think that my sound data is in the original installation path when actually i've already moved the sound data to my external hard drive. I don't think there's any improvement in performance but it does give you more space and helps with organizing your sound library. I've done this method successfully with the XLN Audio Addictive Drums on my win7 64 bit. This method should work across different platforms (windows on the xp,vista,7 and 8, mac, and on Ubuntu)

(to the admins) i hope it's ok to post links but here's one that explains the difference between a soft "symbolic link"/ "symlink" and hard "symbolic link". A soft "symbolic link" is almost like creating a shortcut folder, w/c doesn't work with XLN Audio Addictive Drums but worked for other vsti's such as spectrasonic's omnisphere, trillian, and stylus, alchemy, etc. So i recommend trying a hard "symbolic link", w/c worked perfectly for me.
