I had an alert through Zonealarm AV, so I got the original installer from Cakewalk, and I have the same alert.
The problem comes from the original installer from Cakewalk.

Why i am not able to install into a folder of my choice? Who made this installer?

Morons at Cakewalk, i suppose.

But all is not lost, you can make a nice package yourself, and it will even be portable.

What you need is the following:

(Note: Since this setup does intentionally not include any registry entries (for perfect portability) the GUI will default to english.)

1) A folder (lets name it CA-2A LA for simplicity sake)

2) The Resources folder

3) The patched DLL

4) Manual (.pdf) and Helpfile (.chm) (both optional)


Put 2, 3 and 4 into 1 and there is your portable package. If you need both architectures you can either make one such folder containing the 32bit DLL and another folder containing the 64bit DLL, or you can simply put both DLLs in the same folder.

To use the plugin as VST2 simply copy the folder into your regular plugins dir. To use it as VST3 put another copy of the folder in the VST3 dir and rename the DLLs extension from .dll to .vst3



Optional Stuff

If you dont use the ProChannel version, (can only be used in SONAR), and you want to get rid of ALL unneeded ballast, you can also delete all files in the Resources folder except for the following 7:


ca_background.bmp
TextResources.cwres
ca_knob1.png
ca_knob2.png
ca_meter.png
screw.png
switch.png


(These 7 are the only ones that are really needed. They must be present in any case.)

If you DO use the ProChannel version you can keep the ones prefixed 'pc_' additionally to the 7 mentioned above and still delete all of the superfluous unused/unneeded ones.


Last but not least you can open TextResources.cwres (also located in the Resources folder) in Notepad and edit it as preferred. For example the plugin description (2nd item from the top) is stupidly long, and since some hosts use this to identify the plugin in the mixer and/or routing matrix its better to replace this unnecessarily long wall of text with a simple CA-2A LA. (Or whatever you prefer.) Just edit whatever items you want, its pretty self-explanatory what is what.


When youre done simply archive the CA-2A LA folder. Now you can unpack that folder wherever you need it (like a friends computer) and the plugin will work instantly.

i made such a "single bundle" first at the fix - but after thinking deeper i decide to let the installer like it is because i thought this brings even more confusion, also that i have to made a reg-patcher for the multilanguage support.

i have compared both UAD's LA2A and this Cakewalk one:

-the UAD's one has a bit more of 'headroom' and feels a bit more precise when you turn that peak reduction knob, it remains sounding still very 'musical' at extreme settings.

-this Cakewalk one isn't that bad, but the change becomes too much radical as soon as you start tweaking the peak reduction knob, it's either 'too much' or 'not really enough', when pushed to extreme settings...

uhm.. i prefer the UADer's one (maybe its a placebo effect)

But i also have a similiar problem with tubeohms vsti plugins. They create an extra folder called 'programms\tubeohm' in c:\ for presets, wavfiles and resources etc. And when i am moving this folder into the tubeohms plugin folder the plugins won't work. And there is no possibility to redirect the plugin to the new folderpath.
