not even close bc you tried it out and compared the two? or not even close bc you dont believe its possible to replicate?
  Member 17.01.2024 516

Yes, I compared those two. I could hear each instrument with Sonnox enabled while the JS Inflator got them smashed. You need a pair of good studio monitors or headphones to hear the difference. I see some person used ipad for testing - if this is the case - go ahead either sound good

i guess you need an even beter pair of monitor then. with the same settings on both, it pass the null test perfectly (-130dB). (except if you oversample JS as there is no oversample option in sonnox).

As I said in my previous post , Sonnox gives me better instrument separation and overall sound quality. Enjoy your null test with decibels and oversampling.

Peace.

It's pretty close, at least my noob ears cannot really hear that much difference. Considering latest Oxford Inflator release in this site seems to be from 2012, it's pretty nice to have something more recent.

EDIT: Just learned about Arboreal PiMax, should be even better. Not free option though if that's what you're going after.

I totally agree with you, having a replica of this is pure gold

Haha, word? ~"not even close."
I'm running with Blood Shot here.
It's strange to me how Oxford has achieved this legendary status with a plugin that does what's essentially a simple action that's merely tedious to replicate. And then people act as if these tools should be judged as though the question is simply one of quality, as opposed to scrutinizing them on a per-mix/source basis.

Do a null test and compare them please and then comeback with a report and VIDEO where we can see the result

i know right?! i mean, for one, its called JS, and not Sonox!!! Where do they get off, thinking they can name something JS?!?! Secondly, whats with the Oversampling?!?!? Terrible!!! who wants stinky old Oversampling? That stuff is for nerds and snobby audio types. I want my inflation done the old fashioned way. These dang kids and their skibidinflators!! get off my lawn!!

It's called JS because it was a" Jesus Sonic" plugin for Reaper at first.

Why, oh WHY did they use an Italic Font???
In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they're not.

yeah that was an interesting choice. . I prefer the alternative gui that came later... someone else on githhub apparently felt the same you did and threw that in last summer or something...

To clarify once and for all. This plugin is the exact copy of Sonnox Inflator, and even better because it also has the option of OS min and Max.
I ran a null-test with the original Sonnox Inflator and they cancel out 100%

As they say: "knowledge is power".
When you know what "secret stuff" Inflator does, it's much easier to believe there are no differences, and null-test proves it. It's a pretty ingenious plugin. Great in small dosage. Makes your mastering limiter work less, if needed at all. Cheers!

yup. It's a waveshaping function that cost a lot of us a lot of money back in the day. But it's this or close to it:

f(x) = A⋅x + B⋅x² + C⋅x³ - D⋅(x² - 2⋅x³ + x⁴)

where the coefficients A, B, C and D are given by the Curve parameter:

A(curve) = 1 + (curve + 50)/100
B(curve) = - curve/50
C(curve) = (curve - 50)/100
D(curve) = ¹⁄₁₆ - curve/400 + curve²/(4⋅10⁴)

This gives us the following resulting curves:

At +50:
2⋅x - x²

at 0:
³⁄2⋅x - ¹⁄₁₆⋅x² - ³⁄₈⋅x³ - ¹⁄₁₆⋅x⁴

at -50:
x + ³⁄₄⋅x² - ¹⁄₂⋅x³ - ¹⁄₄⋅x⁴

and whatnot.

And hey, I think the JS Inflator actually oversamples where the OG Sonnox does not etc...

Whatever, been down this rabbit hole and seen enough either null tests or ear tests to not get my feathers in a bustle about it.

Free, works. simple. great.

It's all good.

The blurb says it wasn't tested in FL Studio but the accompanying video is created in just that so it is good to go! Also, I'm watching it on my tablet and the sub bass deep frequency makes for a silent listening on these tiny little speakers, LOL.

Yeah, I haven't used the Melda one myself, but I've heard a lot of great things about it... one of these days...

There is free one called zl inflator.

Yeah, I took a peak at that, looks promising and has shows some additional capability... it seems it hasn't been updated in awhile (October 2023) and not tested as much, but 'passing' so far.. not sure if the dev is still active iirc... will have to take a look at that again closer later...

For anyone interested:

Surprisingly, this is pretty damn close. I played with it for a while earlier comparing them on different sources. It's especially similar when you push it. That's the part that got me. I was having a harder time with hearing it when using subtly, but when you push it, it felt damn near identical to me. There might be the slightest of slight volume-calibration differences -- where Sonnox is ever so slightly louder.

I have basically the same impression, tbh. Like I said, it's only when it's very subtle that it's hard to "know." But to my ear, I would say it's the same damn thing, surprisingly.

Sounds good, better than other emulations to my ears, but crashes all the time in S1 7 WIN 10, so for me it is unusable.
