I didn't watch the YouTube video, but I've been playing around with it for half an hour or so and I really love it already. It's pretty complex and not that intuitive, but even so, for a non-musician, it's really easy to quickly come up with pretty complex chord progressions and melodies that are in key. And it doesn't do that thing so many of these music theory avoidance programs do of forcing you to work to a really repetitive grid.

All in all, it seems like a nice little app -- though if you've already got your music theory sorted, you probably wouldn't need it.

This video (part of a playlist) seems even more suitable:

Yeah, that's right up my street. Thanks for posting the links, g23. The longer I play with it, the more impressed with it I am. It's not a point and click thing, you really need to work through the manual/wiki to get a sense of it's power but it's the best of the composition aids (for my needs at least) that I've played with to date -- and I've played with a lot of them.

Yeah honestly, this is kinda fun. I had a couple of head scratches but once you figure it out it's flowing nice.

Thank you guys for your advice. :)

In general, I don't like this kind of software, however, this one in particular has interesting options for chord generation and working that are very useful and perfectly complement my composition style.

If you guys have a melody ready, I recommend importing the midi without chord recognition, then you can generate the chords in the program and there are so many options with which you can do it, and results so good and immediate as well as modifiable, that I feel like a child in a playground.

I watched a video from the series gargantuan23 links to above comparing this with an app called OrbComposer, on the grounds that they both do similar things.

Of course, OrbComposer is here on the site, so I downloaded that and had a look at that as well. That's got a much slicker interface, less clunky, more polished, etc. but it doesn't seem anything close to as powerful as this app. As Bad Noyz says, the results I'm getting with it are great.

Even that i think that having these helpers is totally legit, don't you feel it's a bit like cheating? i mean you can make some nice beats and have a sense of achievement and be proud of it, but if the results seem to be so random, does it feel like you made it by means of a sustained creative effort? .... i don't know, i will probably try it out as comments seem to be so positive, but i wouldn't like to abuse it, i wouldn't feel to good if the main composition is not more 'hand-made' to say so. I understand and respect other views of course don't take it wrong!

Thanks Sunny for sharing!

Finally as for the chords, which is what I use this app for, they follow a series of rules, this app, allows you to work with those rules in a simple way and with immediate results that you can modify according to your creativity and knowledge, personally I do not feel that this app in particular interferes with my creativity but gives me creative guidelines that I can polish, most of the time outside the app since it has its limitations, but for me it is a time saver.
If you have to screw a lot, an automatic screwdriver is quite useful, in terms of music, knowledge and creativity matter more, but, if you have the tool, why not use it precisely as a tool?

Absolutely not.

Sometimes we get a beat in our head and we work with it, but when you have writers block, you need inspiration. I use 4-8 bar generators, so far I've built the base for 3 songs off this afternoon. I started with the base and work on the rest.

Basically you use it for random ideas, there's absolutely no way this could write a song for you... But could it get you started? Yup. Can it help with Drums, Bass, Guitar or Piano/Synth? Yup.

It's just a starting point. If anything it should be a motivator and inspired start, but if you beat yourself up over using the tools available to you, that all the pro's use, you end up cheating yourself in the end.

Live and create 100% free.

I can't believe I almost past on this because of a crappy YT video. Thank you Bad Noyz, buntymc and gargantuan23 for steering me straight. Great day.

I totally agree with you, I have tried many apps of this type and it seems to me that this one could only be compared with Synfire.

I agree with you too, Bad Noyz -- about the whole cheating thing. If I'd learned an instrument from childhood and had some musical training. I daresay I would have a really solid grasp of what chord progressions sound good as a result of years and years of practice and performance. I don't have that, so apps like this give me a short cut from what would otherwise take hours and hours of trial and error and might still end up sounding like crap.

I mostly make techno, and there isn't generally an awful lot in the way of complex chord changes and melodies in what I do anyway, so this is really just a helpful way of coming up with chord progressions, melodic phrases and basslines that sound good. But coming up with that initial eight bar loop has never been the hard part for me anyway. The hard part is finishing a song that I think is good enough for me to care about to listen to a second time. The more ideas I can generate, the more likely it is that I'm able to do that.

I am an amateur musician trying to learn harmony - really learn this time - and these apps have been very helpful. By order of usefulness and flexibility, I would rate RapidComposer first, then Scaler - which is almost as good, but in a different way and with a much better interface - followed by Captain Plugins (which I bought) and Orb Composer, which was a bit flawed but seems to have improved quite a lot in version 1.5, although there is no cracked copy yet. I would also mention Hooktheory, which uses a very different approach but is brilliant in what it does. And then there is the mother of all those, Synfire, an absolutely amazing program that costs an arm and a leg (over 800 euros). I have been looking for a crack for years now; it wouldn't seem so difficult, as the demo version is fully working.

It's hard to understand why many of those apps cost so much. Musicians usually are short of cash. I would gladly buy all of those, as I already did with Captain Plugins and Hooktheory, if they were minimally affordable. in fact, I even wrote to the developers of Synfire a while ago asking for a discount, but they didn't bother to reply. RapidComposer is also quite expensive: the full version - the only one worth having - costs 200 dollars.

i wonder if you can use in conjuncture with other prefab blocks, because i have been doing almost the same thing with ezkeys for a long time. and i can import midi there. if you can import/export with this it might give a twist

It does some really clever stuff with imported midi and the export facilities work really well.
