The latter. Well, they do sound similar, but they differ in features, mostly. Like R2 and R4 - R4 is kinda like R2 but with "warp" FX [overdrive and compressor].

R2 is my favourite because it sports the right features for my work. R2R is also not bad. :) Thank you so much for all Exponential Audio releases today, R2R!
