Description: Update for NI Kontakt v5.6.6 Portable

The main need for updating:
- All new, released from this moment, protected libraries are incompatible with previous versions of the Contact.

Some of the fixes are:
- The search dialog for missing samples always offered a user profile folder instead of a folder with patches (nki).
- Crash when switching to a minimized view of the Contact window (under certain circumstances).
- some settings of the tool banks were lost when the snapshots were re-saved.

Changes:
- After registering the protected libraries, the "Add Library" button needs to restart the Contact.
- Added list of registered libraries: main menu> "File"> "Options ..."> "Libraries" tab
If any registered library is not visible in the library browser after restarting the Contact, enable it on this settings tab.

As well as in version 5.6.6 PORTABLE:
- All settings are saved in the program folder (full portability)
- No need to install additional software (Service Center, Native Access)
- Ability to work simultaneously with the installation version of the Contact without conflicts and with different settings
- All limitations of the demo version are removed
- No additional activation of protected libraries after adding to bookmarks.
- Ability to re-save patches of protected libraries with samples
- Possibility of editing passwords

Bravo! Portable is a good way to use the newest libraries without the use of keygen and without uninstalling kontakt 5.5.1 version.
It would also be nice post the portable 5.6.8 "full" version...

You install the complete Kontakt installation in the VST directory and there is a dll file for using in your DAW.
It's important that you first install the
Kontakt 5.6.6 portable version
. Because this file is only an update.
You can find it here: NI 5.6.6 portable

The update you should install in the same directory and if you want you can do it like me to have 5.6.6 (installed version) and 5.6.8 (portable version) both but 5.6.8 portable in a subdirectory. You do not need to uninstall any other version you have so you can test without risk.

I installed both Kontakt Portable 5.6.6 and the 5.6.8 Update and also have Kontakt 5.5.2 installed and both run well in Live and even simultaenously (Win 8.1).

Only issue is an Ableton error about not being able to restore a session when crashing but deleting the preference.cfg and undo.cfg file before booting Live solves it untill I close Live. Same issue as with the Positive Grid plugins a while back so it's a known issue. I do wonder if someone else solved it though...

I also wonder if you can add the same library to both instances of Kontakt though.

I did. To me that's the only reason why I installed the portable version. It's not that I wanted/needed new functionalities but some libraries required a newer version than the 5.5.2 I have running (and didn't want to risk breaking with a newer update).

I've been looking into the Ableton issue some more but so far alas no solution.

Fortunately none. I did some research before (also reading all the comments on Audioz) because I was afraid I'd mess up -which does happen more often than prefered with Kontakt iterations.

Thing is the portable is installed on another drive (so not C:\) and while some people even don't install it and just copy the files to a folder I did use the included installer but as far as I can tell no new folders were created.

I'm not 100% familiar with all workings such as if it's possible to install the same library my 5.5.2 version uses -so double- but the activation proces is so much more simpler with the portable version: just activate it in Kontakt and add library by browsing to the folder so no longer making .XML files and messsing with the registry.

I do have one library which won't install though and since the portable version doesn't use Service Center I don't know how to solve this but I'm far from finished trying out different solutions.

EDIT: @Laudioz and many others including the NFO mention installing the portable version in your regulare VST folder but for me this didn't work so I used another internal drive. Just some additional info for others running into any problems.

EDIT 2: Btw. I finally solved the issue with Ableton having problems with undo history after installing Kontakt Portable by re-installing Live. Don;t know what the issues was although in the \appdata folder with previous Live versions there was a Live 9.7.4 folder while I still used 9.7.3. My guess is somehow this was the cause deleting the .cfg files didn't work.
