AB_LM is a gain control which enables level matched and sample accurate AB comparison of FX chains.

We at TBProAudio found us very often in mixing or mastering situations where we need to quickly identify the contribution of a certain plugin (FX) or even a complex FX chain to the sound.

Most DAWs can easily enable/disable (AB) single plugins or even whole FX chains, but in most case there is an audible loudness difference between both cases. In order to compare the impact of a plugin chain objectively the loudness of the incoming signal should match with the loudness of outgoing signal.

Comparing the plugin effect at equal loudness levels avoids the "louder is better" - pitfall.

Mode & Link Channel
Sets the mode of the plugin, either Sender or Receiver and the link channel for the communication. Sender is placed before the plugin(s) which should be AB level matched, Receiver is inserted after.

Latency Compensation
Some plugins add latency to the plugin chain. For a sample-exact AB loudness comparison audio streams need to be synchronized. This can be done automatically (just press PDC button and wait 1-2 seconds) or manually by entering the latency value (in samples).

Pre-FX Loudness
This meter shows the current and maximum loudness of the audio stream just before the plugin(s). Many plugins work best at a certain loudness level (e.g. -18 dBFS)

Post-FX Gain
This meter shows the loudness difference of pre and post-FX signal. The match button lets you set the additional post-FX gain (match mode "manual") based on current loudness difference. Match mode "Auto" does this automatically.

Match Modes
AB-LM lets you match the loudness either manually, or automatically.
The mode "Gain Stage" works differently: The additional FX drive gain is just removed from the audio stream right after the FX chain for "pure" gain staging purposes.

Snapshot Slots
AB_LM provides 4 snapshot slots to store and recall settings for FX drive and Post-FX gain. So you can test your plugin chain with different gain levels, all loudness matched.

FX Drive
This parameter adjusts the additional pre-FX gain.

AB Switch
This button lets you seamless switch between pre and pre-FX audio signal.

Pre-FX Gain
This meter shows how close the loudness of the incoming signal is matched with a certain reference level. Many engineers work with loudness calibrated audio systems.

One of the most useful plugins on the market- It works as simply and as well as a level match plugin should, and it's light and quick enough to make your mixing far more objective.

It is a very simple level matching plugin. Most others I've seen require routing, are too heavy on the CPU, and/or are too slow to mix through. For my setup, plugins with a big CPU hit are less of a problem, but it's still nice for plugins to not hog CPU and light plugins are the mark of a good dev, often. My DAW is arguably one of the easiest to route in, but routing is something that I don't want to do over and over- I'd possibly find myself wanting to skip using the level matcher to mix through. At that point I lose a lot of objectivity, because louder will always sound better.

With my preface out of the way, I'll answer your question.

AB LM is a level matching plugin with two modes- A sender mode and a receiver mode. The sender samples the audio levels and sends them to the receiver, which listens and turns the audio levels up or down to match the sender's levels. If you open your AB LM instances in order, it will do the sending and receiving for you, so you don't have to worry about it. Although the in-plugin routing is extremely simple, this is another time saver.

How does this plugin help me? It helps me remain objective. Again, louder will always sound better. It also helps me do my gain staging, because it tells you how much gain it's adding or subtracting compared to the sender. What I do is stick the signal processor I want to use between the sender and receiver instances of AB LM. This makes decisions ridiculously easier than before. It is far more easy to set compression attack and release, for example. Compressing is now something that I can do quickly and efficiently. When I'm done with whatever processor (EQ, Comp, etc.) I am using, I look at how much gain is being added or subtracted, and set it for the out gain of my processor. Or rather, I set the gain so the AB LM receiver is adding/subtracting as little gain as possible. It makes my gain staging disgustingly good. When I'm done working with a processor, I delete the AB LM instances or move them to be around the next processor I'm working with.

It is insane that most people don't take advantage of this plugin. It's absolutely a top buy, up there with digital room correction, as far as plugins.
