thanks, a very good sys-tools post wink spoke only for my self: "acronis true image" is also a importand "must have" tool. i miss some small helpers for the users here like eg. "whereisit", but mostly the kickass "total-commander" or "total-commander Ultima Prime" (if they also fall under a real sys-tools cat. here...) *missing is the wrong word, i wonder why they not allready posted here*

True image is good for backup, but not for restore. no

It happened to me twice that a restore of my backup failed with Acronis. dunno

i use this tool since it go on the market, i really NEVER have ANY trouble with backup & restore. i have to say: im not a backup junkey, i just make ONE masterbackup after i install a new win7 incl. my most used appz! so everything DARK could happen now, i only have to put the DVD in my cd-rom and click one button, now *after 10 minutes* it's all like the installing day *except the new win7 updates* (i make this DVD with autostart trueimage, if insert in my cd-rom instead of standart loading win7, so i can deinstall true-image after the master-backup on my win7 because im also able to make backups from this autostart dvd incl. the backup on this one)

this is more than enough for me, i suggest you: if you made a backup, let acronis check\validate this backup on the process (dont know how this feature is called in english) than you are safe that this file is 100% proper (safety-first: after this i would also take 2 different resources -> 1x DVD backup(s) and 1x on a external HD)

try "Drive Snapshot"! it's a great imaging tool - small, portable, very reliable...

Well I did that. But anyway, that's quite some time ago, perhaps the program has evolved. May I ask a stupid question: Have you ever done a restore? Because a lot of people (and even companies) do backups every day, but never do a test restore. no

Now I use Paragon, but fortunately I never had to do a system restore. :)

Have you ever done a restore?

*laugh* - sure, so many times in the long past that it's countless. i do not just restore my backup if the system gets broken or attacked by a virus, i have my master-backup so i restore (more or less) this one every 3-4 months, only to clear up all my installed tools that i have deinstalled (dirty registry) or other reasons. the mainthing: to set my system again to the fast end fresh installing point!

(i have also all vm-ware systems \ win combinations we could make, but i test not every soft at this safe environment *except if i do virtualizing soft, means: my portable versions* but sometimes im lazy and install all things on my real system, so the acronis-restore time is coming for sure and always)

thanks for that =)

but I use acronis true image 2011 + plus pack...

what are the benefits of using this one over true image in terms of DATA/VOLUME BACKUP if there are any?? thx

PS: for those who had problems restoring an image file they made...it often means that there is a problem with your HD in the first place...

your HD may seem to work perfectly but chances are it has a few (often overlooked by quick analysis) dead clusters and that's the cause of error when backing up, especially as most of these backup tools just rush ahead without even bothering to check the HD first (Paragon does however...but common sense isn't so common!) so whenever you do an image of your HD..try it out just to be on the safe side!

I must admit that I'm too lazy for that, backup as well as restore takes a lot of time if your hd is full, and at home my computer is permanently running so I cannot sit there and wait for it. damn

I only use Acronis True Image to backup my system drive. I don't need to backup anything else, because i keep my drives sharp and upgrade them every 3 years.

oh and BTW, since we're talking about backups here, you might want to check this offer from Amazon:
http://aws.amazon.com/glacier
i'm already using it

I only use Acronis True Image to backup my system drive.

But what's the comfort here? I have all my audio stuff (VSTs, librarys etc.) on my second HD partition, so if I only would back up my (40 GB) system partition I would not gain anything, because I had to reinstall all stuff.

And backing up my 500 GB-HD every other week is a real PITA. damn

The best backup program is Macrium Reflect. There is a free version.
The paid version has a few more features.

I tried loads of backup apps. Most failed to automatically backup
or had errors when restoring.

I have the paid version of Macrium Reflect and swear by it.

maybe you change in the next "format C" time something for this reason... i use all in this way: the C:\ windows partition is here WIN7 90% only (i install nothing in that) because i made for all things own partitions like:

C:\ win7 (only)
D:\ Programms (all sortet in main-cat folders)
E:\ Working (also sorted in main-cat's like "audio" - "gfx")
F:\ Downloads (yes also in cat's before it goes to dvd)
G:\ Temp Stuff (for all trash, testing or similar things)

so maybe you make seperatly partitions with the Disc Director that saint makes aviable for us... after this any system backup need's only some minutes with one click (because win have only the regfiles etc. of the installed appz on my D:\ partition inside, *i have to reinstall nothing on D:\ after restore*), so you are able to backup the "D:\Programms" by just burning all to DVD's or by copy on a external HD if needed, without any backup tool. if you make something like this only ONE time, you dont have any "lazy" trouble in the future...! (btw. i know people who search mostly all, and this everytime on the own machine because they are to lazy to make only one time proper folders... i am that type of user: im to lazy to search my whole life anything on my pc!)

same here, because after i get my first 64bit pc, acronis doesnt really work on it, so i try the first time in my life similar tools but what shoud i say... after this i decide to work still with acronis, maby it's just all a matter of taste and acronis never let me stand in the rain...

My setup is very similar acutally (c only for Windows). But how do you handle something like this: You make an image of c and store it away. Next day you install some essential software which registers etc. Do you then make another image? Because otherwise all changes after your first image are lost if you restore your first image.

So either you are making images after every main install, or you lose all changes.

And that's quite the hassle for me. yes

dokx1:

for usual: NO, i dont make a new image (because the real most importend appz are stored in my "master-backup", so i have "new importand or needed" tools install again after restore my backup (but im not a appz-collector, so this need's not a lot of time) but they all go's into the next master-backup if they are really "most wanted".

the second thing: this is one mainreason (between the allknown benefits), why i have started to virtualize individual apps for my self (means portable appz) - at this time i use many appz (more or less than 40) that i use in a portable way. it's the first thing, that i do if i need\like a new software.

(btw. i use "spoon studio" and not the popular "thinapp" to make working portables, but that is another matter, if anyone is interested \ new in that portable theme, just send a pm, i try to do my best (because my english) to help in maybe ask questions)
