The Holy Grail of Smooth Compressors

Give your music the sound of silky-smooth Abbey Road RS124 compression – the legendary velvety tones heard on every Beatles recording made at Abbey Road. With two distinct flavors to choose from, this classic tube model is the only software emulation of the ultra-rare RS124s, approved by Abbey Road Studios.

Few pieces of gear define music history as the RS124 does. The custom-built RS124 compressors were the secret weapon of Abbey Road engineers during the ‘60s – favored by Geoff Emerick for punchy bass sounds; by Ken Scott for lush guitar treatment; by Norman Smith for lightly gluing the entire rhythm bus. RS124 was also a popular choice for mastering in Abbey Road’s cutting rooms.

The RS124 sound is especially famous for the thick, creamy bass tones it produced on Beatles classics such as “Rain” and “Come Together.” Abbey Road engineers would typically push the input of the RS124 deep into 15-20 dB of gain reduction, producing wonderfully lush results on numerous sources.

Today, Grammy®-winning pop/R&B and hip hop engineer Tony Maserati consistently applies RS124 tones to his vocal tracks, including those of Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, to supplement their stunning voice qualities.

The RS124 was actually an extensive in-house modification of the American Altec 436B compressor. It is believed only 25 units were ever created, and each serial number was hand-built by Abbey Road/EMI technical legends Bill Livy, Len Page and Mike Bachelor.

Naturally, no RS124 unit sounded exactly the same. Each had different sonic qualities and attack/release times, due to constant tinkering of the components used. As a result, some units were more suited for tracking, others for bus compression and disc cutting/mastering duties.

Accordingly, the Waves Abbey Road plugin features two distinct RS124 flavors, modeled from the original hardware:

•Studio models RS124 serial no. 60070B – a favorite unit used for tracking at Abbey Road from the late ‘50s into the ‘60s, due its faster attack and release times. This is the more aggressive sound of the RS124, which creates a beautiful “squashed” sound on transients.

•Cutter is a modification with slower attack and release times. The slower RS124s were favored for studio reduction mixes and in Abbey Road’s cutting rooms during the ‘60s. The more relaxed attack made these units suitable and more forgiving for bus compression and mastering purposes.

The RS124 is a feedback compressor with a variable recovery. Want it to become more aggressive? The included “Super Fuse” mode matches release time to attack time, creating a brutal compression character that sounds like it’s “fighting against itself.” Try this on your drum bus for complete room destruction.

The legendary RS124 left a huge sonic fingerprint on the Abbey Road ‘60s sound. Since its rediscovery in the early 2000s, this important, rare and unique compressor in still being used at Abbey Road Studios today. Now, its one-of-a-kind sound is yours.

i might be wrong, but i think these 3 newest plugins represent the end of the line for win 8/8.1 users..you can use all plugins except these last 3..seems it won't load the waveshell 12.1 x64 in either vst3 or vst without an error.

Installed and tried the RS124 plugin, it has weird release behaviour (like all old type of compressor), it has a smack mode (a feature added because the compressor is shite) I'm not kidding. SUPER slow attack (like slower than your favorite RMS compressor) and release speed (setting 4 at any Fairchild that nobody use) which aren't gonna be useful for modern type of music. But if you are mixing some old people song and still crazy about fucking Beatles, go ahead because the CPU it eats alone with that kinda of saturation (which is easily achieavable with 10000 saturation plugins out there) you'd rather use your DAW stock compressor.

If you know your history, this compressor was deemed obsolete and useless by the Abbey Road engineers in the 70s after they invented the more reliable TG consoles. Some old hoarder been keeping it silently because he has trouble letting go. Now it is hyped like it is the best compressor ever.

Thanks to VR (and the uploader) for sharing this release. We need all other Waves plugin but the newest RS124 is a total scam. Even Waves have to add some smack feature because they realize after modeling it, it is total shite and it is hard to sell this one. Fucking Beatles. sigh.
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.

Why does it feel like they made a small image with these UI's then stretch the small image to a bigger size.... instead of making a large image and have it scale down.... like honestly what the fuck...

Just saying thanks. i will wait a few months to try anything new from waves weekly updates. Happy with the few classic ones i use. All the others are a waste of space.

the compressor does a weird transient spike after a few seconds of no audio. thats really annoying. eh honestly im not impressed. sounds like every other compressor. might be just me but its nothing special. why does waves keep doing these type of plugins that suck? they are so obsessed with the Beatles sound when nobody really wants that sound in 2020...

I believe the Auto Hold is meant to alleviate that spike:

I haven't installed yet because Waves 12 dui didn't show up at all on my Mac, High Sierra and I couldn't go back to 11. The AU reg no longer worked. None of the plugins resize either but I'd love to know this isn't giving anyone any of those problem on a Mac.

Same here, and it seems as if everyone has it working, but no one cares to explain how to those of us who can't. On Windows 10 please someone explain how to use the "offline installer" because trying to according to the description doesn't work.

Choose offline installer and navigate to the Waves directory you just unzipped. Choose that and then it should give you options on what you want to install. Then use the patch provided.

Awesome! Thank you!
Does anyone know if the Studio One plugin snapshots from W11 will be recognized with this? It too FOREVER to create those snapshots and I like to be able to see the plugin thumbnail in the Studio One effect and instrument browser.

preferences files. reboot. Install V12 only. Patch. Run AU utility.
Scan in Logic. It should works.

On Windows 10 : in the Waves folder you get once you extract these files, after you run the Install_Waves_Central.exe as administrator, right click and open with Waves Central the above which is the install.cen, there you will be able to use the offline installer to choose your Waves plugins of choice.
