UnderTone Audio UnFairchild 670M mkII v1.0 REGGED READ NFO WiN-BUBBiX screenshot
BUBBiX | 16 September 2024 | 78 MB
This plugin is a painstaking recreation of the coveted Undertone Audio UnFairchild 670M mkII Vari-Mu Compressor.

A design and development collaboration between MIXLAND and Eric Valentine, it is a process that starts with testing and measuring then, listening and experimenting and tweaking and refining over and over and over for over 6 months. The result is a plugin that unquestionably captures the unique vibe and character of the hardware.

Now we can all enjoy the magic and mojo of the classic UnFairchild sound in plugin form.

The features and controls for the UnFairchild 670M II plugin are the same as the hardware, with a few additions. We added an Output Level Control, Wet/Dry Mix control, and an Overall THD control. The Overall THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) control allows you to increase or decrease the amount of UnFairchild style THD character.”

Tried it in comparison with UAD on some drums and on the mixbus.
UTA is a bit more open and transparent in the way it grabs the signal, UAD sounds more glued right away but maybe a bit more smudged overall. Don't have the Overloud one unfortunately. Just my 2 cents

Please understand that digital tubes and transistors are very limited and expensive to make. The margins are already pretty tight, especially considering this is an infinitely downloadable plugin... You download it twice, boom, there goes another tube from their stock.

I'm usually a Kiive fan, but man, this one is really not it. It suffers from all the Kiive jankiness, the UI is pretty bad (you can barely see the VU meter while the knobs are unnecessarily large), it uses way too much CPU with no oversampling, takes a long ass time to load too.

Just get MagicDeathEye (mono and stereo versions) instead...

I prefer Ultramarine 4, cpu is slightly less usage and sound more polished.

Until now, Ultramarine rules. The best in the box, in my humble opinion:)

yeah the thing is that Ultramarine Attack and release times are way slower than the standard Fairchild. If you look in the AA manual all time constants are slower, the attacks are around 1 full ms for the fastest. Fairchild Time const 3 the attack is 0.4ms while AA ultramarine is 2ms attack.

For me, vari-mu like fairchild is a tool for color.
It should sound good even without compression.
This is how all MEs use vari-mu in mastering.
For me, the best ITB fairchild is UAD's fairchild 670 legacy, which I use for everything.
AA's ultramarine sounds great, but it's too heavy, so I'd only use it for a single purpose like mastering.
This plug-in also sounds good. It's great even with a little compression.
However, I feel like their plug-ins (kiive, mixland, purafied, audioscape, etc..) have a cheap texture that I can't describe in words.
I'm not an expert on coding, but I have a strong impression that the audio engine they use is not very good.

This blows every other 670 style plugin away, I have them all, TBT Cenozoix & McDSP are pretty good, Magic Death Eye too but it is not a full Fairchild, its a lot more hi fi sounding.

Do you like the new Lindell MU-66 which is kinda the same thing ?

On OS i figured this plugin uses more CPU than Ultramarine on 2x. As with the unpleasant texture, i felt that too long time ago but cant tell what it is, my guess is the oversampling. I usually turn off the OS and lower the THD around -6 if the thing starting to become obvious. I agree with the DSP engine, he's kinda new to this (learned plugin coding during Covid) and probably will get better in time considering how much he's getting jobs nowadays.
