Unisum is a state-of-the-art mastering compressor based on a novel topology combining impeccable sound with unmatched musical flexibility.

Built in collaboration with experienced mastering professionals, Unsium features clean wideband compression driven by flexible multi-band detection, and extensive control over envelope and transfer curve. Whether you want to add glue or groove, shape the dynamic contours, or solve a challenge in the mix, Unisum helps you achieve your goal with precision and integrity.

Highlights
β€’ Add depth and energy without sacrificing the integrity of the source material
β€’ Control stereo image and add natural width using Mid/Side mode and flexible channel linking
β€’ Add polish and cohesive glue to any mix regardless of style
β€’ Shape Attack and Release curves for perfect grab and movement
β€’ Tailor every part of the compression response for a unique fit with the material
β€’ Solve challenges in a mix with the highest possible precision and fidelity

Key Features

Exceptionally clean compression
One of Unisum’s most compelling traits is the incredible clean compression. With extremely low intermodulation distortion and practically no digital aliasing, Unisum rivals high-end analog gear. Combined with musical level detection, program dependent envelopes, and smooth gain reduction Unisum delivers transparent compression that is perfectly suited for program material demanding the highest fidelity.

Wideband compression with multi-band control
At the heart of Unisum is a unique multi-band detection path offering immense control. The sidechain is split into 3 frequency bands, each with parallel RMS and Peak detectors. The result is efficient yet musical level tracking with flexibility to tailor the response for a perfect fit with any track. You can also set up frequency dependent Threshold, Ratio, and Attack/Release.. all without destructive crossovers in the audio path.

Full creative control
In stark contrast to automated β€œAI” tools and oversimplified one-size-fits-all compressors, Unisum provides detailed controls that empower you to respond with great precision to what your ears and emotions tell you is needed for the most impactful sound. Adjust the Attack and Release curves and set up transient specific timings. Shape the transfer curve. Filter and limit the channel linking, and much more.

Character when you need it
Unisum stays clean, until you tell it not to. Engage the HYGGE circuit to add mastering grade transformer and tube warmth. Being highly level and frequency dependent in nature, HYGGE imparts subtle weight and thickness to any sound. With Memory Effect you can mimic the program dependent behaviour of opto compressors, or inverse it for a very different feel. Or you might want to crank the RMS detector speed for some low end bite.

I've been messing with it for 4-5 hours now, and I got to say, this is one of those very rare times when the hype is justified, I didn't want to like it tbh and I wanted it to fail the listening tests, cuz I hate hype, but it truly is excellent.

I haven't messed too much with the compressor modes, I've been mostly using the "Unisum Default" and also I still got to read the manual because, tbh, the controls in the advanced section are alien stuff to me.

By only playing with the main section of the plugin and doing comparisons with similar plugins like Pro-C 2 and Compassion, I always ended up preferring the Unisim (F***!!! ) not by much, but yes. The transient preservation and rounding sounds better than pro-C and compassion. The Relax and Release Curve controls change the sound in a subtle but meaningful way and can be useful if you know what they are doing.

But where I think the heart of this compressor lives is in the Unlink knob, for the type of productions that I do and the way I hear things, M/S unlink has more sense to me than L/R in the master bus. The MS unlink in this plugin works better than everything I've tried so far. Try it at 30-40% so you don't loose the "glue" element, it really relaxes the compression and make everything sound a bit more spaced.

I wish the knee was a little more gradual like in Pro-C 2 but I'm probably being too picky. Another win for Pro-C2 & Compassion is their visual side chain (there is nothing wrong with using your eyes sometimes IMO), and the possibility to use different slopes for the hi-pass filter & some advanced side chain capabilities. I'm gonna buy this one... when it's on sale.

Edit: I forgot to mention, I didn't fully liked the saturation, but you can just disable it if you want.
MY GEAR: Only Hi-End HW sonically engineered for us cats, which you've probably never heard about and will never have access to, cuz we r awesome and u suk.

I bought this bad boy a year or so ago, everybody should be very grateful of SEnki and co here! Can confirm it is an amazing compressor. It lives on my mix bus, i mix into it. You wont find a cleaner compressor with analog style behaviour in the box. Not only that, it's CRAZY versatile if you know how to work it. You can make it do basically anything you want as far as behaviour/action

I'll be interested to see what Tone Projects does next. Maybe an EQ?

Much thanxx for this beauty.

The sympathetic mastering engineer Mark Wingfield takes a detailed look at the parameters of the Unisum mastering compressor. He explains in a pleasant calm way what makes it easier to understand more.

The transparency of this digital 1s and 0s compressor is on another level, so much so to which each and every knob or button altered makes absolutely no perceivable audio difference.

I have to say that after trying this plugin, it is the first time that a specialized mastering compressor makes sense to me.
