Do you mean the Arturia versions or an actual Minimoog and Jupiter? I know the Minimoog was used a lot in Industrial as well as the Jupiter 8, it's a staple. He was critical of Arturia emulations if those were the ones you were referring to but his critique was actually spot on.
Arturia:
Samey same. All the plugins have this samey same sound no matter what. The osc never seems to have character, and the filters barely have any usually. It sounds so sterile. Sure with some compressors I can make them more lively, still it seems like a lot of work to get them to sound good. Arturia has their bundle on sale, but i still don’t think its worth buying. I just think the envs and the high end sounds strange, the minimoog is fat but it has this wrong shape to the sound, the envs are just whack.

He tended to favor synths I happen to like and use a lot particularly Omnisphere, Trillian, OP-X Pro II (Oberheim emulation) and some others. I was actually writing a whole response but then decided fuck it let's make this an article on AudioSex...so without further ado: VACs Take On Software VST Synths

Like I said though, if u-he works for you then who the fuck cares? I just put it up for informational purposes. I know for example Psy'aviah love Arturia synths and they're doing just fine with them. It's always going to be you being a bigger factor than anything else.

Well, as the serials are the same of the old release (the only one which is still working - ex. zebra 2.5.4) think they are obviously black listed and think the plugs will go in demo mode soon

The same happened with zebra 2.6 updated last september by Kookaboo.... wish I'm wrong....

I just love mac. found out in ten seconds.
Go to system prefs/privacy/ there you can see firewall go to the lock unlock it with your password.. activate firwall.. in firewall options you can ad logic. Its very simple.
Just go to firewall settings and it wwill explane itself.

I just love PC: thanks to it not dumbing down the process for me I now actually know how to do it with any firewall I encounter. Even though Windows is also going down this annoying path lately.

I'm amazed you've never seen us talk about it and it's not a stupid question. Yes you install a firewall such as LittleSnitch.

That should work.

If you block the daw with firewall or little snitch..do you still have to do the host edit?
  Member 5.03.2011 84

Yes, LS doesn't block this kind of "home call" so you need to edit your hosts.

Furthermore think all of this things are useless (in this case) as the serials included are the same of the old releases and u-he have blacklisted them for sure, so expect your plugs will turn in demo mode soon (the plug will accept your serial then the time bomb will do its job).

That's what I was thinking because these are old serials, there's no way in my mind this would work extended. However two can play that game, I will simply uninstall all traces and reinstall, just to prove how futile these efforts really are. Copyright protection schemes are boring and there are also plenty of free options out there so I'm not dying inside even if I end up not being able to use something. Instead perhaps lower the price on your product. I'd really rather get a hardware synth, it's certainly about the same price as a few of u-he's plugs and then you have hardware. I remember when Klanghelm was released we held back releasing it for a long time...out of respect. That is how it's done. He wouldn't pay more than 30 bucks for a plug and so he didn't charge more than 30 bucks. Not saying it has to be so low but reasonable. I really hope that guy goes to the fucking top. Some of the asking prices on blah plug-ins (not specifically referring to u-he here) are nothing short of ridiculous and the people will make their own corrections if necessary.

Think it's not so easy... for example with zebra 2.6, after the time bomb, I deleted all the files the installer placed in the hd, prefs, etc. but the plug write somewhere other info I can't trace and then can't delete. The final result is: deleted everything, reinstalled the plug (vers. 2.6) but it doesn't accept the serial anymore. I had to re install the 2.5.4 (last working version).

I'm not on Mac but on PC I would wipe all traces and do a thorough cleaning in the registry. You can actually do an install trace with Revo and then save the log. When you uninstall it should use that log to uninstall everything. Still confused as to why a separate program is necessary to do this and not the OS itself but I guess it's that companies write shit uninstallers that leave crap everywhere.

On Mac there are Revo similar soft (ex. CleanApp): they trace the install but the install process is not the matter... the plugin write something in our system during execution (in particular after the time bomb) and the above app can't trace this kind of activity (they could trace what an app is doing but not a plugin).
So, for example, you know what Cubase is doing (and writing) during execution, but not what a vst plug or instrument is doing or writing.

Revo also will pick up keys and files that weren't logged initially but got added during your usage of the plug-in and ask you to remove those as well during uninstallation. Unless he's writing to some non-standard registry locations it should be possible. If for some reason it isn't then I will find another alternative, if one doesn't exist then I will fucking write another alternative after I knock out some of these other pressing projects like the album.

I was talking about the hardware of course. But again, it's the old boring "hardware vs software" discussion, ask ten people and you get ten different opinions. Anyway, nice read of course.

Yeah of course, you're absolutely right. That's why I always say it matters what you think not Hans Zimmer or anyone else. I still find it a good way to for example maybe check out a synth that you forgot about. Plus it's always good to see what the canons of the genre used in their productions. For example I know Combichrist uses V-Station, FLA uses hardware Minimoog's and about a million other pieces of gear, etc.

Mac users can edit host file easily with a little app named "Hosts". It's for free and will be installed as preference pane. It still works on Mavericks.
However i bought Little Snitch two years ago. What it does automatically, was worth the price to me.

U-he plugs do not call home, so save your efforts with all that firewalling.

Safely you can use those serials only for the release they were bundled to, not with the newer updates, of course they are blacklisted within the code.

Urs is very generous with us testing his stuff', he uses very long-termed time bombs which only trigger if you use his plugs intensively in a lot of projects.

So it's useless to fire up a plug once in a month to check if it's still working. But make a track with some instances of U-he, work on it for some time and bam - surprise surprise...
  Resident 25.04.2012 74 7701
+14384
Then you reinstall and wham back in business. Useless. And when I was using them it wasn't that generous, or perhaps it was a bug who knows?

That's a good point about LittleSnitch, for some reason I thought that was a different thread. So many convos. Yeah they don't call home, that's at least one step they haven't taken yet, That's why I asked how it's possible that the serials weren't blacklisted in the new installers.

On Mac they do call home sadly, dunno on win.

Wow really? That's ridiculous. Also why I added the word yet. screenshot

So hit 'em where it hurts, don't cave and buy his stuff. Support devs that don't use ridiculous copy protections schemes. For example:
SonicProjects: Op-x pro II is the fucking bomb. THE BEST SOUNDING VST on the planet. Sounds so Vintage and does amazing strings, pads, leads and bass, and the filter sounds great. It clobbers Diva….

It's a hell of a lot cheaper too. Better yet just save up for hardware.
