Most distros would work fine with that;
Now if this is specifically to run Bitwig, Bitwigs system requirements are going to be the main limiting factor (min 4G ram).
I would probably try to stick with a 'supported' distro, i.e. something Ubuntu-based (Ubuntu proper, Ubuntu Studio, the slightly leaner Lubuntu, etc).

I believe Bitwig dynamically optimizes itself for the available hardware/resources, so just try and see if it works.

Don't worry, your contribute is still much appreciated.
Ignore people asking for win/osx versions, they should read the rules and make request posts instead of polluting the comment section.

Man take all the time you want and need! I am so grateful that someone is taking care of Bitwig. And especially the Linux version. With Windows 7 support ending soon I would think that Linux is going to be at least thought about by musicians in the long term. It might not be there yet and most musicians still dismiss Linux outright, but Bitwig, I believe, is a huge, significant piece of the puzzle, and something that can play a major role in making Linux remotely attractive to musicians. So thank you very much for doing this, it is very important work! I don't have Linux installed right now and can't test it. But I just wanted to express how awesome this is.

quote by unfuYou could extract the .deb and copy the bitwig.jar into your installed 3.0.2 version

Tried that, sadly it just crashes Bitwig on run before the splash screen.

Try creating a blank file named '.activation-5' in your ~/.BitwigStudio/.
(e.g. on the commandline: touch ~/.BitwigStudio/.activation-5)
and run again.

If that still crashes, can you post me the md5sum of your original bitwig.jar?

... and start 'bitwig-studio' from a terminal, and see if you get any useful error/logging output

I see our confusion here, I was working from your earlier comment and assumed you meant one could try using the jar on another platform, which of course doesn't work. ;) Cheers for the hard work!

Try to do what frz Sayd:

"managed to run on manjaro after a bit of tinkering: installed official version from repo and then had to overwrite the whole opt\bitwig-studio dir from the deb package instead of only bitwig.jar
also added "127.0.0.1 services.bitwig.com dash.bitwig.com" to host file.

works wonders, great job unfu!"

I am not at home now,i gona test it asap.

Please Note: there is an easy way to install .deb packages on other (not ubuntu) linux distros, using Debtap.

Read carefully [url=https://www.maketecheasier.com/install-deb-package-in-arch-linux/]HERE[/url] (the second part) for the recipe. So before doing anything, install debtap on your distro.

Then you'll have to use the Terminal, but it's very, very simple. Two things to remember:

1°) Preferably use 'sudo' at the beginning of each command

2°) You'll have to update the database first. In brief: launch your console (terminal), type:

sudo debtap -u
followed by the [Return] key.

Here you'll have to type your user (login) password. Note that you'll have to type it "blindly": nothing appears on the screen. Don't worry, it's by design. Hit [Return] again, and wait for it to finish updating.

Then the good part: type
sudo debtap
, followed by a [Space], then with your mouse drag your *.deb file (from a file manager window) and drop it in the terminal window (remove unecessary ' or ", and unecessary space at the end, if it's the case), then hit [Return] again.

For example, in my case it shows:
sudo debtap /home/onlyme/Documents/bitwig-studio-3.0.2-unfu.deb
(replace "onlyme" by your login name, change the path accordingly to the place where you have put the .deb file)

Wait until it finishes (don't bother about warnings, and know that it could takes a while, be patient) ...Et voilà! You have your package in your "Documents" folder.

(For example, if your distro is Arch Linux or a derivated (Endeavour, Chakra, Kaos...) the resulting package to install will be called "bitwig-studio-3.0.2.unfu-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz", but of course it could be completely different, following your distro)

Once debtap have created an adapted package for your distro, you can use a graphical program like Pamac or Octopi to easily install it on your system.

Thank you unfu, this is a great piece of work!

Thanks for your hard work. Unfortunately I think there's still an unpatched check in there, as I get a loud beeping like morse code. I remember getting a similar problem with 2.x releases.

I was able to use it for about a day before it started doing this beeping - it's not a vst or system setup issue as far as I'm aware.

my hostfile was set up like this when I installed (I commented out packs after, so that I could install content packs)

0.0.0.0 dash.bitwig.com
#0.0.0.0 packs.bitwig.com
0.0.0.0 services.bitwig.com
0.0.0.0 bitwig.com

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I'm afraid so. In at least one instance (after release unfortunately) I got the beeping issue as well. Same thing as in 2.x apparently.

Once it strikes, it seems to 'corrupt' the specific project. (Can copy-paste everything into a fresh project and it's gone. For a while at least)

Not entirely sure yet under which conditions this occurs. If anyone has any more info on how to consistently reproduce this, do let me know.

Reading through past posts, I've found that it seems to happen when someone uncomments packs.bitwig.com in the hosts file and downloads things from there. Is that the trigger for the morse code? So far I haven't had any experiences of that but I haven't done extensive testing either so I wouldn't be able to tell.

Do you think there might be any other causes for this?

I originally installed and had problems after allowing packs.bitwig.com. I uninstalled and reinstalled, keeping packs.bitwig.com disabled and I haven't had problems.

Some of the content/presets which come from packs can be found in other torrents, so it's workable.

Thank you again @unfu

Quite a few threads on Reddit and Bitwig's own forums that state this is their copy protection kicking in - apparently it's Morse code for "buy Bitwig Studio'! I thought it was linked to the number of saves of a file at first, but had it happen today on an unsaved file. Oh well, back to Reaper I guess.

After some hours of use, I started getting the morse code beeps...

Edit: I added packs.bitwig.com to the /etc/hosts, and I'll see if it corrups any future projects. If it does I'll reinstall without downloading any of bitwigs packages and see if that helps...

It was working for a while now, but it started beeping again today. I did edit the hosts file properly. i don't know how they figured it out. Hope unfu will be able to fix it... :(

I found out that upon starting Bitwig, application "java" starts to listen to port 1234 over the tcp6 protocol, and all ip addresses. I used ufw (firewall) to check this. I blocked java from doing any traffic now. I'll post if it worked or not.

I got the beeps after playing with it for 30 minutes. My host file is already edited and my firewall was configured to block the bitwig app, however I still got the beeps. In the terminal I used the command lsof -i to check apps with internet connection and everytime I open bitwig I still got this: TCP *:1234 (LISTEN) and a bunch of other bitwig related processes. Could you please tell me how to block this 1234 traffic thing? I'm on ubuntu 19.10. I found a handy solution to this beeps, the user welikeknobs posted it on Olymoons WIN release post. You have to setup your cue/preview output to anything but your main speakers and then silence that output. You will lose the ability to pre-listen to samples and your metronome but on my opinion it is definitely worth it. This workaround have been working for me for 2 days now.

Install gufw - it's a firewall.
Open gufw from your menu or open terminal and type "gufw". Enter your password when it asks.
Once you've opened gufw, check the Status, and turn it ON if it's OFF.
Then, go to Report tab. Now start Bitwig and monitor the Report until you see "1234 java" pop in there.
Click on the "java" entry to select it. Then, click the "plus" icon at the bottom left.
The dialog will pop-up.
Here set the
Policy to Deny,
Direction to Both,
Protocol to Both.
Finally click Add and you're done.

If you want to recover your beepy projects do the following:
Open your corrupted projects and copy all tracks to a new project. Save new, and delete the old (corrupted) projects.

I hope I was clear enough.

If you have other questions, I'll try to answer and help.
