You mean 7zip ? 7zip is free and does a better job on compression.
But scene-wise rar is still the most used tool, so for a better compatibility it's better to have both.

Never heard that. How does WinRAR have more compatibility?

In my experience, 7zip does everything and more while being free. No reason for WinRAR to exist. It just has brand recognition. I haven't touched WinRAR in probably 15 years! Long live OSS!

You are right from a end-user POV.
That said, rar compression is very efficient and when they update their RAR format, 7-zip has to update to be fully compatible. I can remember a time when RAR5 appeared, 7-zip wasn't able to open new format for a while.

Besides, WinRAR has some command line usage which is very convenient for automation, and rar executable is frequently used as external library by other apps.
I guess this is why it is still widely used.

I believe the last version key will work if not mistaken... To be perfectly honest I see no reason to "update" or change versions (from v6.24) unless there is some security flaw warranting the change....

When I update winrar it never asks for a new licence, it just remains the same . So why would you want to use a cracked version.

If you already have a "Fixed" version, download and install the latest one from their website.
It will just update the one you have installed.
That is what worked for me.
