Modwave Native Wavetable Synthesizer Synthesis powerhouse with distinctive wavetable timbres, Kaoss Physics, and Motion Sequencing 2.0. The modwave, released in 2021, builds on the DW legacy and transforms it into a modern monster synth, featuring incredibly deep wavetable oscillators, gorgeous filters, wildly flexible modulation, sophisticated pattern sequencing, and macro controls to deliver unique, powerful, and easily customizable sounds and phrases.

What's a wavetable?
Wavetables are sets of single-cycle digital waveforms, arranged in a specific order. The wavetable's "position" determines which waveform is played. Moving the position with an envelope, LFO, or other modulation source creates subtle or dramatic changes in timbre. Some wavetable systems switch abruptly from one waveform to another; others crossfade smoothly between them. The modwave can do either one.

Modifiers
Use over 30 Modifiers to alter the character of any wavetable at load time. For instance, isolate the odd or even harmonics, add weight through anti-aliased quantization or saturation, or revisit the gritty character of old-school wavetable synths with the Vintage 8 & 12 options.

Morph
The 13 Morph Types let you stretch, squeeze, reflect, and otherwise alter the wavetables in real-time, changing their timbre and—when modulated—creating additional motion in the sound. Sync creates classic swept-sync timbres, using only a single oscillator. Three special Morph Types—FM, AM, and Ring Mod—modulate Osc 2 with Osc 1, and the last two even apply to samples.

A/B Blend
Using the unique A/B mode, oscillators can blend any two wavetables with phase-synchronous precision—different from simply layering voices—opening up a dimension of intermediate waveforms. Add body to otherwise "thin" waveforms, for instance, or a touch of sizzle to a mellow timbre. Even fade between two different "modifier" versions of the same wavetable. A/B Blend can be modulated in real-time, of course.

Gigabytes of samples
Wavetables also sound great when layered with samples, and the modwave oscillators handle that with aplomb, using KORG’s proprietary anti-aliasing sample playback technology. Totaling in the gigabytes, the modwave’s sample library includes new material from KORG, Airwave, and Francis Preve, plus a bank from Plugin Guru and a selection from the Kronos and Krome libraries.

User Sample Banks let you add more Multisamples to the system. You can create your own Banks, or use Banks from third party sound developers. modwave native can load many User Sample Banks simultaneously. This is one area in which software has the edge, due to the large amount of storage and RAM available on your computer: the hardware modwave can load only one User Sample Bank at a time.

Version 1.2.4

Known issues
Ableton Live: program changes are slower than expected for VST3 instruments in general, on both Windows and macOS. The slowness appears to be more noticeable for plug-ins with large numbers of automatable parameters, including modwave native. On macOS, we suggest using the AU version of modwave native as a workaround. Ableton is aware of this issue.

New Features
New user-requested modulation sources have been added:
Pitch Bend+ and Pitch Bend- use only positive or negative pitch bend movements as the modulation source, ignoring the other polarity.
Kaoss X+, X-, Y+, and Y- let you create four independent modulation routings emanating from the center of the pad.
Random 1+ and Random 2+ generate random positive numbers, unique per voice, at note-on.
Random 3 +/- and Random 4 +/- are similar, but the generated numbers may be either positive or negative.
Constant Max generates the maximum modulation value (which can be thought of as either 1.0 or 100).
Motion Seq On lets you create modulation based on whether or not the Motion Sequence is enabled.
Step Pitch lets you modulate parameters via the Pitch Lane. For modulation destinations which use semitone units, a modulation Intensity of +1.0 produces one semitone of modulation for each one semitone change in the Pitch Lane. This is convenient for modulating Filter Cutoff, for instance. Note that this means that the overall signal level can be very high.
All LFOs have been updated to include a Free-Run mode (including Trigger controls), Curve mode (Symmetric/Asymmetric), and Delay.
The new Sync Notes Mode parameter controls behavior when Sync Notes is On.
Sync Notes: start phase syncs to the oldest sounding note, but with note-specific modulation. This is the classic "Sync Notes" behavior.
Free Run: all notes share a single LFO, which starts when the sound is selected and only re-starts if specifically triggered.
Scale editing is now supported. Please see the manual for more information.
Changed the export file extension for scales to .korgscale, and that of wavetables to .korgwavetable. Older wavetable files and scales stored within bundles will still load as well. This is the first version to add user scale editing, so there should be no pre-existing user scale data.
Reverb Sends now include Pre/Post switches.
Pre: the signal is routed to the Send before the Layer Volume is applied. This means that the Send level is independent of Layer Volume. For 100% reverb, set the switch to Pre, and turn the Layer Volume all the way down.
Post: the signal is routed to the Send after the Layer Volume is applied. This is the default, and the way that the modwave worked previously. As you increase or decrease Layer Volume, the proportion of the dry and reverberant sounds remains the same.
MIDI CI functionality is now supported, for connection to the Keystage.

Other Improvements
Program Transpose is now split into two separate parameters: Octave (+/- 4) and Transpose (+/-12). Previous settings will be preserved in the new format; for example, an old Transpose setting of +30 will now be shown as Octave = +2 and Transpose = +6. Note: this invalidates previously created automation of Transpose.
Fixed a graphic display issue when typing in an Intensity value in the Mod List (as opposed to using the slider).
Previously, if Kaoss Physics was Off but auto-launch was enabled in the Preset, Kaoss Physics would momentarily output the Start X/Y points before snapping to the center point. If Lag Time was non-zero, this could be audible. This has now been fixed.
Improvements to copy/paste/insert for Motion Sequencer Steps.
Previously, after undoing Insert Before/After in Motion Sequences, redo did not work. This has now been fixed.
Previously, in the Librarian, if multiple items were selected, clicking on the Info panel's Favorite icon could inadvertently edit the item names. This has now been fixed.
A progress bar now appears during long Librarian operations, such as when importing many wavetables.
Previously, Favorite status would be turned off after undoing a delete or duplicate action. This has now been fixed.
Previously, clicking on the heart icon in the Librarian inspector caused keyboard focus to move to the Name text editor. It now moves to the main Librarian list instead.
The Librarian now prevents empty sound names; if you delete all characters, the name reverts to the previous text.
When editing Mod Knob names, the Editor now prevents entering excessively long names, illegal characters (e.g. backslash), or empty names.
Previously, the on-screen graphics for LFO waveforms Random 1 and Random 4 might have displayed incorrectly. This has now been fixed.
