Kazrog Avalon VT-747SP v1.0.0 [WIN macOS]-FLARE screenshot
Team FLARE | 23 AUGUST 2023 | WIN: 74.4 MB | macOS: 117 MB
RELEASE NUMBER: FLARE-1910/FLARE-1911

An analog icon, redefined for today's producer.
The Avalon VT-747SP combines a tube/discrete modeled Class A opto-compressor with a musical six-band program equalizer, as well as output level and gain reduction metering. Ideal for signal conditioning, stereo buss compression and EQ, stereo keyboards and mastering applications.

Avalon VT-747SP Native was developed by Kazrog in conjunction with Avalon Design, and is meticulously modeled upon their hardware, carefully studying multiple units over the course of 2022 and 2023. We believe it is the most accurate digital representation of Avalon's legendary analog hardware to date, and we are honored to have been selected to model this incredible piece of hardware.

Features
Full dynamic control from soft compression to hard-knee limiting can be achieved with master threshold, compression ratio, attack and release controls.

Gain reduction indication is a large analog-style VU meter.

Low and High Frequency (LF and HF) contour parametric spectral controls can be routed into the internal side-chain path for enhanced frequency dependent compression with variable frequency and threshold levels.

SC LISTEN switch provides side chain listen mode for easy monitoring, or creative EQ applications.

6 band graphic EQ models the smooth characteristics of an all passive design. The frequency turnover, Q and amplitude ranges have been carefully chosen for each band to provide the most natural harmonic balance with lowest phase change while offering simple and effective tone control.

Graphic EQ can be placed pre or post compressor for enhanced versatility.
TSP (Tube Signal Path) which gives you the choice of either tube tone (utilizing three virtual high-voltage dual triode tubes), or the classic, Class A discrete transistor sound (utilizing virtual discrete transistor amplifiers) in the primary opto buffers and output stages.

The fact that trusty FLARE has uploaded this means it wont be abandoned & we will be seeing the updates.

oh Kazrog did it, would be nice to compare with UAD2.

That'll be hard to do, UAD haven't made one of these. This is the stereo 747, and is meant more for mastering, UAD did the mono 737.

different Avalon models, so very VERY different units: very different EQs and tools

UAD's modeled a channel strip that became standard for voice recording/mixing in hiphop/rap situations, and also very effective for bass guitar, with an amazing preamp model

The Kazrog model is a BUSS/MIX BUSS/MASTERING unit

Obv one can try different situations for both, but IMHO the 2 plugins cant be compared

PS: I use the UAD avalon extensively since 3-4 years

Doh...now i see, it is not the same, thnx for the infos.

Not a true emulation, because of found bug by the guy from GS. Bug is that equalizer gives veery different results at different sample rates. So which sample rate gives closer emulation of eq? Wait for fix, then compare

quote by molokososbecause of found bug

Already mentioned in the REQ section here. I can confirm this for the Demo version, the higher the SR, the flatter the highest shelf.

i have read that the hardware is completely bllsht in the Request section from Stevie Dude

high-shelf world class. the rest average. try read sometimes. :)

yeah i can read sometimes but i forgot to write about the shelves when people see an opto comp . So i repost the comment for them to judge .

'' the only thing people use on this hardware unit is that high shelves, this is a stereo bus unit and opto compressor for stereo bus will destroy the mix more than it enhances it .... People buy this hardware unit for that shelves only, it's what it's famous for. Everything else is average on the hardware and it becomes twice average in plugin format. ''

I did read stevie's comment, and I can confirm that cant be shortened in " hardware is completely bllsht"

Anyhow, NOTHING from Avalon can be in the same sentence where's the word BS, that's TOP QUALITY audio hardware, among the best of all times

Maybe we can say that "it work in a certain situation but it doesnt for another", thats fair

@stevie dude What do you think of the high shelf on the plugin compared to your hardware?
  Resident 29.11.2020 29 3047
+3094
of course the plugin sounds like shit that I think if anyone bought the plugin is kinda dumb, deaf and gullible. Imagine thinking developer that cant even do oversampling properly able to replicate the hardware.
  Resident 2.02.2014 1 2649
+1458
Yeah... Random crashes in kclip2 pro, weird start-restart to enable oversampling in kclip3, or not reducing aliasing distortion in kclip3.5+..... And now problems in true iron, true dynamics, avalon
.

Why are you saying these things when you know they're not true? Anyone can check if aliasing filters and implementation works on their plugins and they do work fine.
be kind :)

tested front to front with my hardware 747
well. is not the same, of course . . .
the most poor thing is latency, hardware no problem with latency (working in real time) for me is more intuitive insert my hardwarein a channel, and freeze de channel and use hardware again in another channel.
Mid frecuencies sound more boomy in plugin.
Saturation pushing input is not so nice and not work in the same way
air is not so bad
(i was thinking the most difficult task will be the air thing, but is not so bad . . .)
Nice plugin for de-esser, i was not using the plugin, but for mastering or 2bus is not a great idea with lots of plugins more nicer here

the sidechain EQ control, does it work the same ? it's kinda counter intuitive in the plugin if you know what I mean, the knob gain flipped, boosting seems to cut in SC Listen Mode, and vice versa.

Well, if you're trying to match the exact same settings you will have some problems, here's a bit of text from the Dev himself to help you improve your AB testing:

1) One key difference between the hardware and the plugin is that the plugin uses the documented range for the graphical EQ sliders, rather than the actual range we measured on several units. In general, the center 4 bands have about 3/4 less boost/cut range on the hardware than the documentation says they do, so if you're matching settings, that's something to keep in mind. Why did we go with the documented range instead, you might ask? Because it's important to us to have tools that provide intuitive user feedback and results that are predictable. That said, we may offer a "tolerance drift" feature in a future update to optionally emulate the drift and variation of various analog modeled components.

2) Tube selection can make a significant difference in the gain staging of the VT-747SP hardware. We modeled a modern, relatively clean set of tubes, but we plan to offer a "tube rolling" feature down the road to allow users to change the harmonic voicing of the plugin.

3) The gold standard of blind audio tests is ABX testing (which is impossible to do on YouTube itself, but possible if one has lossless files to download.) There's a free software tool here to conduct your own blind ABX tests http://lacinato.com/cm/software/othersoft/abx
be kind :)

I appreciate you contributing some information of note that I wasn't aware of, despite having followed their progress since the initial announcement earlier in the yearβ€”especially appreciative in fact, after sifting through all of these comments that range from the rabidly subjective to the unrepentantly jaded. No one's happy with anything these days, especially with emulations: "It doesn't sound like the hardware!!" all the while they've never used the hardware. Besides, if a plugin does what you want it to do, and/or torques your tone where you want it, where's the issue? I don't necessarily need a 1:1 emulation, need a tool to get me from where I am to where I want to be, simple as that.
