Xenakios HourGlass 1.4.5 Windows [FREE] screenshot
v1.4.5 Windows | ~5MB | FREE
HourGlass is a standalone application intended for radical sound processing by taking fragments (more commonly referred to as "grains" in other similar software) from sound recordings, to create sound textures. It is not intended for minor transparent corrections of playback speed or pitch, but is rather placed firmly in the sound mangling/glitch territory:

Imports most common audio file formats : wav/aiff, 8/16/24-bit PCM, 32/64-bit floating point and more, sampling rates are compensated on the fly as needed.
Multiple sound sources can be used simultaneously by the fragmenting process.
Most sound parameters can be automated using envelopes.
MIDI and OSC remote control of sound parameters and various user actions/commands.
4 channel mixer with insert slots for built-in effect as well as VST plugins.
Multiple CPU cores can be leveraged to allow creating very thick textures of up to 256 voices.
Simple programs can be written to control the properties of the fragments that will be played.
Dozens of other features and more to come in the future.
There is somewhere a MacOS version (1.4) too, but i did not find it. It Also looks like Xenakios did stopped hosting and developing any audio plugins, instead moved to VCV Rack? But well that happens. If you manage to find the MacOS version, add download in the comments or send me a PM, i will upload it. Otherwise enjoy.

One of the best granular processors out there. Extremely powerful software.

Did you ever use Granulab or Cecilia?

Never got my hands on Granulab but I'm a big fan of Cecilia. The only thing I wish could be done with Cecilia is to run more than one of its modules at a time in a chain without having to render first. But that's a small niggle because it is a great piece of software.

Edit: Soundgrain is neat, too. Same developer as Cecilia.

And some of the strangest results I've had come from Argeïphontes Lyre. It's quite unpredictable, however.

*Holds a sign up* "Get it here!" (weird vst and original standalone)

We used them at uni, among other things; it was fun. Haven't used them in quite a while, now, although I agree with what you said. As fun as the modules were (especially anything pertaining to granular synthesis and other deep audio scrambling ones that had many parameters you could draw lines/curves for), like you, I do recall wishing I could use more than one! Even with its drawbacks, it's still very powerful. I actually prefer to process audio in such ways offline than in real-time in my DAW, anyway.

Oh yes... I do recall downloading Soundgrain but never got around to trying it out.

Ah, that'll be why I haven't heard of the last one, because it's for Mac, but no reason why uni couldn't have had it, too?

All of you that love granular synthesis, should check Parawave Rapid.
It's powerful and yet easy to use.

Aha, yes... Thanks for reminding me about something I've been wanting for quite a while! :')

mondomorte, have you used Soundgrain much? Do you prefer it to Cecilia, or do you like both for different uses?

Thanks to all of you folks for suggesting these programs. I fucking love granulation. Right now playing with Soundgrain. Love it already.

this conversation is great - a lot of great plugins/apps i haven't heard of. i'm still a big fan and user of the old ktgranulator fx plugin (now salty grains) still so damn powerful yet so simple.

Oh yes, that one was fun. Did you ever try Argotlunar?

i did! i don't think it's as easy to use as ktgranulator but for a freebie it's still amazing.

This has better be good, it is named after Iannis Xenakis, the developer of the granular process and stochastic compositional methods.

xenakios is just the developer, hourglass is the program named. But i am sure the developer choose his nick after mr. xenakis.

for those mac users, here is a download of, possibly the last osx build of hourglass. i don't believe this was ever developed to work beyond osx 10.14 (but i'd like to be proven wrong there):

Hourglass OSX

and a decent demo of someone using it on a mac:
