ABBEY ROAD | 50s DRUMMER delivers the electrifying sound of the birth of popular music – a time when amplified instruments rose to prominence and drums came into their own. Expertly recorded, ultra-rare drums deliver an evocative, mid-heavy sound ready to compete with the latest electric guitars and basses. Adding its own touch of classic style to the DRUMMER Series, 50s DRUMMER also features period-authentic grooves, capturing the flair of early rock and roll, rhythm and blues, country, and jazz.

RECORDED AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS

All drums were recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, UK. An iconic symbol of the music industry since 1931, Abbey Road has been the location of countless landmark recordings by artists such as The Beatles, U2, Kate Bush, Oasis, Kanye West and Radiohead, to name just a few.

Abbey Road has pioneered many studio techniques and technologies, and is widely recognized as one of the most advanced recording, mixing and post-production complexes in the world. Their expertise was crucial in creating the period-accurate recording paths that form the core of ABBEY ROAD 50s DRUMMER’s sound.

THE DRUM KITS

Native Instruments Abbey Road 50s Drummer KONTAKT-MAGNETRiXX screenshot

The drum kits in ABBEY ROAD 50s DRUMMER were recorded in Abbey Road’s Studio Two. Extra absorbers were used mimic the tighter recording environments of the 1950s. The drums feature a rough, cutting sound, with massive, resounding snares and mellow cymbals.

The Spring Kit is an early-50s Gretsch Cadillac Green Nitron with a 20” bass drum. Its 12” rack tom and 14” floor tom are tuned lower than those of the Autumn Kit. Three interchangeable 14” period snare drums deliver brilliant sonic options.

The Autumn Kit is a late-50s WFL with a 20” kick, 12” and 13” rack toms, 16” floor tom, and a choice of 14” x 6.5 “, 14” x 8”, and 13” x 3” snare drums. Its higher tom tuning means it sounds slightly brighter than the Spring Kit.

THE MIXER SECTION

Native Instruments Abbey Road 50s Drummer KONTAKT-MAGNETRiXX screenshot

Create the perfect drum submix completely within the instrument! All ABBEY ROAD DRUMMER instruments feature a dedicated Mixer Section and a range of high-quality studio effects, including tape saturation, convolution reverb and three big-league effects: a top-quality studio EQ, a high-end studio compressor and the awe-inspiring TRANSIENT MASTER.

And if time is tight, Mixer and Effects presets provide instant pro sound with precision mic levels, the perfect blend of close and room mics, and just the right effects to set it all off.

COMPREHENSIVE GROOVE LIBRARY

Native Instruments Abbey Road 50s Drummer KONTAKT-MAGNETRiXX screenshot

The right drum sound is only part of the equation. ABBEY ROAD | 50s DRUMMER provides a Groove Library full of beats and fills perfect for everything from rock and roll and country to jazz and R&B. A set of modern grooves is also included for producers looking to add some vintage spice to their contemporary sound.

These MIDI patterns were played live by professional drummers – find the beat that suits the track you’re working on, choose fills and variations to match, then drag and drop into your host sequencer.

And if you’re a drummer yourself, just hook up your e-drums and you’re ready to go.

Oh wow, another one. Maybe just put the midi grooves on? (don't need that 8GB hog) That would be just a few MB in a zip file and useful with other drum kits.

I`m totally in different music genre but I must say that drums sounds just great..I never using MIDI grooves,i play it myself on V drums or type it myself,yea it`s CPU thirsty,but it is also 2013...With today configuration it can be handle,i guess that is the price to run new libraries and VST`s?
Cheers to all.

In general, these Abbey Road libraries are really great. I don't much dig 70s, 80s, or Session... but Vintage and Studio are GREAT.

I recently did a bunch of demos for a major label artist in the UK using Session Drummer... on one tune I used Slate drums, and the A&R guys mentioned in passing that the one with Slate Drums sounded a bit fake (he did not know anything about what I was using).

There is a lot you can tweak in the NI libraries that make them extremely versatile, if you know what you're doing.

Yes, each library has a certain character; however, overall the samples are really good and immensely musical. The CPU hit is not unbearable.

LOL Frubbs! Anyway, I think N.I. have missed the boat on this one, doesn't sound typical 50's. Still, we got it very early so... thanks to Sunny.

It has enormous difference in sounding between USA and Britain. Try listening with the ears in Britain not in America of the 50's, although many musician bought those Drum Sets from Germany and did lots of productions made in USA. What do you think about Abbey Road in the 50's? Do not make sense, maybe for Kontakt company sells more.

You are right if you thought like me, what about the English production of the 50's, if England wake-up to late in the music, after 350 years of the neighbors doing good music for them selfs, but not for the King and Queens, they did 'THE PRODUCTION', good for the years as well as a contribution.

Just for you curiosity: In the beginning of the XX century, many musicians played separated "Orchestra instruments". Snare is still the same of the old old orchestra, in 1899 they adapted another support on it. The Bass-Drum foot pedal was just an adaptation by the Germans William F. Ludwig and his brother Theobaldner Ludwig near 1910, these clever guys invented many other good adaptations for the orchestral timpanis and mallets.

That's is it, the Drums are the same orchestra instruments in a set, the soul in it, is just the configuration. By the way, wonderful.

@bigdssf

I also have that problem with 5.1. The only workaround seems to be adding libs in 5.03 and upgrading after. So for now I'm still with that older kontakt version as long they don't release a fixed new one. 5.1 gives me 'no library found' problem. I can add a lib in 5.1 too but running it in admin mode but after a restart they are without wallpaper and ask for missing info files, completely not working for me. Maybe there's a fix for this under Win7 64bit?

NI Kontakt being a total CPU hog? Who would have thought...

@hammond321:

How are the Abbey Road libraries compared to Addictive Drums? I use AD a LOT for the natural sound. Bass drums are a bit 'vague' though. I'm a drummer so I'm quite picky... ;)
