Native Instruments has introduced Action Strings – a phrase-based instrument, featuring a 60-piece string orchestra, that’s designed to let you create ‘epic, blockbuster sound’.

Performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague, Action Strings offers with over 14GB of musical phrases. The orchestra is made up of a high ensemble featuring 22 violins, eight violas and six cellos, as well as a low ensemble containing ten violas, eight cellos and six basses. The phrases range from basic rhythmic patterns to intricate melodies, each recorded live in every key, and in two dynamic levels.

STRING THEORY

The phrases in ACTION STRINGS were performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague – sampled in exquisite detail by experienced score producers, Dynamedion. The orchestra was made up of 60 musicians – 36 in the high ensemble (22 violins, eight violas and six cellos), and 24 in the low ensemble (ten violas, eight cellos and six basses).

The phrases range from basic rhythm patterns to complex melodies, each recorded live in every key, and in two dynamic levels. Blend between the dynamic levels via the mod wheel, switch the harmonic patterns to minor or major via velocity, or change the meter to fit your production. And because these strings are recorded as phrases, the sound is stunningly natural at all times.

SIMPLE AND FLEXIBLE

ACTION STRINGS is designed to make your job easier. All the 150 phrases are organized into themes of five, with five additional custom slots. All slots can be assigned or changed easily via the phrase browser, making the coherent development of your track completely straightforward. Every phrase is playable in all keys, and is selectable via keyswitch – create epic progressions without spending a lifetime studying music theory and arrangement.

Play phrases in Trigger mode for more control or sync your phrase to the ‘1’ of your host’s tempo. Utilizing KONTAKT’s Time-Machine Pro, you can drastically alter the tempo of the phrase in real time, even progressive changes like ritardando or accelerando – the sound remains strong and natural at all times.

I wholeheartedly appreciate the post;but yep,I too don't need this deal.It seems pretty restrictive,homogeneous to too much out there,& simply quite frankly plain & dull IMO.I'll stick to building my own custom string rhythms with LASS' sweet-ass A.R.T. tool,& with much better sonic quality & higher realism as far as my subjective aural prism registers.

Besides,I so detest pre-defined anything anyway,or at least anything in the acoustic-instros department that renders clearly very disenfranchised from actually broadened phrase-morphing/control capabilities,LOL.NO lazy-loopy or pre-built stuff for me as far as way too many englobed elements in an acoustic-production-tool palette goes,because seriously where the Hell is the challenge,liberty,or realistic constructional satisfaction in employing methods of those fares???

Salutations,likewise Audioz friend.I can completely understand that ordeal,if it restricts to just hinting or sparking up the creative muse to go on a run(& which we ALL know that at times it needs catalysts no matter where or what they come from).Of course if under these circumstantial applications,it can be a timely & useful aiding tool;& there's nothing erroneous or invalid therein these parameters,in order to pave a road-map or set the bases to score up a much more-than-less unhindered composition,&/or therefore a validated ego construct should the results be of grand merits.But to actually go as far as using what this & all tools related to these pre-defined concepts,is/are comprised of just as they are presented for the most-part in their respective markets & instances,to write/plaster something for a serious or final compositional cut?Well IMO,NO fucking way.

Sure,any are free to do or use what they want if it works or is viable for/to them,or they deem fit enough to elicit a sentiment of accomplishment;& there's no denying that.But I for one,simply have & will always have great conflicts,if my work is not as freely built as the current mediums in question may allow me to do so...& of the which,many fortunately can currently do so far more than what these generic deals can or will ever do,without marring or jabbing too gravely at my & many others' creativity-based ethos.

As far as LASS,well I also have several issues that don't have me fully content.But luckily they manifest as nuisances with workarounds,even if it takes a bit more to dissipate these deterrents.LASS 2.0 would be such a great relief,as it resolves what I refer,& has more goodies one could very much appreciate & employ.But any who,I am grateful nonetheless,for whatever is available;& can work with that so long as what it be,does not drive me utterly insane with a too limiting or mediocre level of functionality,sample & articulation qualities &/or amounts,& in summary,the actual use it SUBJECTIVELY provides me at the end of my final renders.

It is true what STA writes. So many loop based libraries out there, if someone makes tracks purely by using loops, it is not really being a musician. You don't call someone putting together a jigsaw puzzle an artist :) He does the same thing, puts together the pieces to form a complete picture.

If you take a drumloop, slap on an action strings loop, then slap on a bass loop, and a synth loop. It might be a cool track, but you cannot really say that you have created it.

Yes! That is right: if you produce a track which is basically all loops and no original material, then the track itself is not original. To use loops or not to use loops: that is the question.

I'm sorry I happen to slightly disagree with the whole loops thing TO AN EXTENT. I think that if you use a drum break, and add a synth from a different library and mix in your own piano, and add strings from here. You are creating something that probably would have never been created if it weren't for you sitting there and doing it. I think its more credit as a composer/arranger. BUT ALL loops or more than a few loops on a 40 track song lets say, is just mixing and matching in a way.
