PanaRhythm is the result of sampling an odd little preset rhythm box we picked up at a car-boot sale. With only three sounds and a handful of rather tired onboard patterns, we weren’t expecting much from this thing; but it turns out to have a really strong, characterful snare sound to it. (The hats aren’t bad either.)

We’ve spread the snare over a whole octave to give you some pitch variation, and there are randomised round-robins of the sounds to get that analogue uncertainty into the tone. A great little snare machine… for free!

The result is a nice little instrument capable of melancholic, deteriorated sounds reminding untuned piano, marimba, metalophone, or music box. Mechaniano comes handy anytime you need something imperfect, rusty sounding and of a piano nature. Regards to all the steam punk lovers!

Doctor 33 is a strange little creation from those funky folk at Boss. Unlike its big brothers, the Doctor 55 and Doctor 110 beatboxes, Doctor 33 isn’t a drum machine – it’s a metronome. Still, it creates a variety of little analogue clicks, blips and ticks which have a fun percussive style of their own; it hosts four combinable onboard rhythms, which we’ve tempo-synced to your host DAW (these include triplets, which can be rather cool); and we’ve grafted on a “Tone” control which actually brings a strongly resonant gritty-sounding filter to bear on the metronome sounds. Sweep this while the rhythms are playing and you can get some odd, engaging effects going, particularly if you layer it over a proper drum beat.

The percussive sounds can be level-adjusted and panned, and played along with the onboard rhythms if you wish. All in all, Doctor 33 is a neat little box for adding some analogue oddness to the background of your beats.

Jacky is the result of a small studio disaster: we had bought a fun-looking little transistor organ called the Luxor Jacky with the intention of sampling its sounds and onboard rhythms. Tragically, though, we’d just finished doing the rhythm section when Jacky emitted a spurt of smoke and a sad noise, and that was the end. There was no hope of reviving her. All we were left with were the rhythms we’d managed to record, so… we turned them into a freebie.

Jacky comprises five combinable transistor rhythms with a warm, slightly gritty tonality, plus drive and compression controls to punch them up a bit. Individual drum hits are also mapped out for you to use. These sounds may not hold down a whole track, but they combine well with other sounds and lend a nice vintage vibe.

PatchVault is an ever-growing collection of patches from the most coveted synths of the past. Taking original, authentic sounds from ancient hardware and wrapping them in a simple but powerful interface, PatchVault makes grabbing that sound a breeze.

The interface is geared towards hands-on, immediate tweakability. It features a neat little Tilt EQ, a powerful 4-pole filter, and can map MIDI velocity to both amplifier and filter cutoff, giving you playable expression that was uncommon on most of the original hardware. There’s Chorus and Tube Saturation to enhance the sound, plus a Limiter to tame over-enthusiastic analogue waves. All the modern additions can be easily switched off, though, if all you want is the original factory patch in its raw state.
