The Guzheng is a traditional Chinese instrument dating from the Qin dynasty (c. 200 BC to the rest of us). It is the ancestor of the Japanese Koto as well as several other zither-like instruments found across east Asia.
A modern Guzheng typically has 21 strings over movable bridges, and steel strings wound with nylon, although ancient instruments used silk strings. These are mounted on a large resonant half-tube box made of wu-tong wood, and the instrument is typically about 1.7m long. The strings are tuned by both moving the bridges and by adjusting tuning pegs.

It is a little known fact, but the worlds ?rst commercially available synthesizer was designed by the Hammond Organ Company in 1938 and put into full production from 1938 to 1942. The Novachord is a gargantuan, entirely tube based,72 note polyphonic synthesizer with oscillators, ?lters, VCAs, envelope generators and even frequency dividers. The ?rst instrument was delivered to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on Jan. 30, 1940 as a birthday present, but despite this auspicious start, the 500 lb instrument struggled commercially.

Pan Drums, or 'hand pans' are a very recent musical invention. First developed in the year 2000 by Swiss company PANart ( the Hang or Hang Drum), their melancholic sound bewitches everyone that hears it.

But, because a pan drum must be hand built and tuned by skilled artisans if it is to sound good, supply is short and they have remained relatively rare and extremely sought after by musicians ; "where can i buy a Hang drum?" is a common lament on internet forums.

The Kim is a type of dulcimer or zither from Thailand, and is related to the Chinese yangqin. Sometimes spelled khim, the instrument consists of a flat soundbox with 42 wire strings stretched across in 14 sets of 3. The courses are struck with two thin bamboo mallets with soft leather tips.

It’s the funny little silver box that Roland released in the 80s to provide bass accompaniment to buskers and cabaret performers. Famously it wasn’t very good at that, and the unit languished in obscurity, until the Acid house scene of the late 80s started to use 303s to create burbling, bending basslines and leadlines.
