after exchanging my Intel CPU Q6600 with Q9550 I went through hell and back...
system first worked, then I experienced much trouble from boot to finish..
To make things short: seems like Windows XP service pack 3 doesnt like AHCI mode so much.
Now testing Windows 7 and systems seems to run stable in AHCI mode which is needed to run my harddiscs in NCQ mode.
Due to the fact, that all 32 bit plugins and hosts still wont see more then 2 ( or was it 3) gig of ram, I guess, a 64 bit system doesnt make sense when host or plugins are running in 32 bit mode.
Also I heardt that virtualisation is on the run: 32 bit Os like WIn XP 32bit can be loaded as virtual machine into a 64 bit host OS, so it is possible to use more then 4 gig under WIn XP 32bit.
So I got two simple questions: which OS do you use and second is: do you use NCQ ??
download from any file hoster with just one LinkSnappy account
download from more than 100 file hosters at once with LinkSnappy.

i got to say, i can't take this stupid micr0soft shit anymore.
after Win7, i am very concerned about happy future of pc-oldies like me. the crap they put in OS these days doesn't allow man to do his job.
i wish there would be the industry under linux... although i can't say linux is much better

Yep, new Windows sucks ass. FL Studio and my Firewire mixer doesn't work on Vista or Win7.
XP all the way!

Win 7 32 works flawlessly, way better then XP. You have to set it up correctly :) Or the problem is in 3rd party drivers...

Im running Cubase 5, RME Fireface UC, TC Electronic Powercore fireware, UAD-2 DUO, Native Instruments Komplete 6, Waves Mercury and Spectrasonics Trilian/Stylus/Omnisphere daily and I've never had a better setup that this :) All works gr8 ;)

I use 2 machines, the second with Windows 7 X64, its a very stable and fast system. But not enough stuff is running with W7 yet dunno,

.......why shuold we complain, we know its all about business... time will come and all will run proberly on W7, right? no

My all time favorite is my old and trusty WinXp X86, runs and runs and runs ......

App is Cubase and Wavelab, thats all! no NCQ

Bye

it depends on the DAW Software you use
If you Run Massive Project that require more than 3.8 GB (Based on a system with 128 MB Video Card) than go with Windows 7 64bit and tweak it to get the most out of it
However if you do smaller and less memory you rather could go and stick with Windows XP
Witch btw can handle up to 4 GB total memory (Inc Video card Memory)

Microsoft never made an OS suitable for professionals. Almost all Windows version are "pro populo" (for largest mass of peaple), especially Vista and 7: attractive look, something "cool" for playing movies and music, some other shit, and of course - famous "security" - which means, if I try to copy something to "Program files" folder, OS asks me - am I sure? - because it's risky... For all that shit about 1 G of RAM... I am still using XP 32bit (cannot use x64 XP, because Edirol doesn't support it for USB UA-25EX). I don't like Microsoft. Windows is not for professionals... and I have no choice...

Windows Seven 64
AHCI on mainly because I save audioz stuff on an hard disk in a 5.25 e-SATA rack.
PC are so much better nowdays in terms of performances and accuarte resolution, but timing is out of control.
Many random calling in the background, programs that use timer in ms when yesterday they counted CPU cycles.

you can only optimize your system.. It's never really perfect in sync, or native.

I tried them all, and yes!! the best one is Linux
using Jack to manage all audio and having latencies that I could only dream with Win or Mac.
Ardour is an exelent DAW and having tons of software to connect them all as you like is like having a little studio inside the OS,

I'm not switching back to be caged and with no control on my hardware.

Using Windows XP PRO SP3. Good enough, but I'm going to Win 7 as soon as Pro Tools will allow. I don't think Linux and unix-based systems are better. They are simply different. Mac Os could be unstable as Windows sometimes, so it doesn't matter to be truth - win or non-win. Both are written by people who make mistakes all the way! More users - more mistakes will appear!

Ha ha ha .... some of u guys are funny ....

I'm using WIndows 7 x64

well all I can say at those who say that ms is crap.... well.... lets think really .... thats a load of nonsense isn't it....??

WHY are you using Windows then ??? Go use linux ... or cough up some cash for EL JOBSO right there ...

Bottom line - if Windows weren't for professionals, then professionals wouldn't use it.... but guess what ??? THEY DO ....
even US army uses Windows....

I am not saying that anything Microsoft puts out is perfect... GOD NO ... especially that load of shit that was Vista .... aarrgh i hated Vista SO MUCH...

BUT tell you what ... IF you really are a professional, then you will know how to make Windows work for you since it is the most supported OS out there .... if you have to bitch and whine about an OS not working, chances are you don't really know what you are doing..

I mean I have had a love-hate relationship with MS, but i simply ADORE win7 .... i have an OLD machine that has celeron single core processor and 1 gb ram ... GUESS what ... runs win7 x32 like a dream .... better than grandpa XP that is so outdated i can't even describe it. Say what you want about win 7 but MS haven't gone wrong there ....

and i work as an engineer for about 10 years now ...

It is a common MYTH that mac OS runs smoother ... it crashes as much as windows only these crashes are not so severe like a bluescreen on WIN ... but it stil does crash like hell and i bet if macos was as popular as windows they would have all those problems that windows have i mean with viruses and such shit...
I used to think the same as a windows user - all the guys who worked in studios always said that mac is the best at everything .... so until i got a mac myself i used to diss windows like you guys but when i actually spent reasonable amount of time on macos i just couldn't believe the same problems i was going through....

besides MAC has this stupid annoying problem with the fact that they have a new version of their OS every year - so the compatibility issues i encountered especially with older hardware were absolutely terrible ...
i mean if some driver doesn't work on windows - there is a chance that some smart dude will adapt the driver or there will be enough popular demand that the company will write a driver for the hardware you are using - the chances of something like that happening on a mac is well - slim....

And don't let me started on linux shit.... well there is only one word that describes linux ---- CODE

:) because if you want to learn it you need to first learn to PROGRAM it and then you can use it .... and really i don't have time for that . . . . do you ???

eh im tired and i have to do some work so see ya suckers

I've used for years and years xp but I must say that the quad core processor is a new technology and I think that you can't use an old host forever even if it's renovated with the service pack..
So I've decided to use Vista 64.

It works for me like win xp, is fast like xp.

I will install windows 7 x64 soon....

ps: my host is 32bit, Ableton 8....

First, *neither* Windows, be it XP or Win 7, be it 32 or 64bit, is optimized for AUDIO.
Second, Windows is no realtime OS, and application do not even have access to hardware timers anymore, which has gone since Win95. (You want 1..2 ms of Latency? see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148404 for some nasty sickness.)

Though I don't support Apple's product and support philosophy, I have to admit that OSX audio, in terms of drivers, features and latency, beats the pants off Windows.

Linux, yes, astonishingly flexible, even the Kernel can be optimized for audio (!), but honestly: Even today, after many years of Linux development, if you decide for Linux, you have to give up many professional and free software solutions which are simply not available. What a shame.
Using Linux means having to live with many restrictions, although e.g. Reaper is said to run fine using Wine, which is quite remarkable, considering the great effects that Reaper has on-board.
Also, Linuxsampler (www.linuxsampler.org) has just reached its 1.0 version release and loads GIGAsampler banks, as well as (limited) SF2 and SFZ.

In terms of performance compared to Win7, free choice of options and straightforward use, currently XP 32bit is my system of choice.

To all: Does anyone have any experience with XP 64-bit? What about 64-bit drivers for audio/midi interfaces?

Mac Pro and Logic
Wont go back to Windows sorry. Its as simple as that.

theMAN summed it up even though he probably didnt mean to lol

"it crashes as much as windows only these crashes are not so severe like a bluescreen"
"those problems that windows have i mean with viruses and such shit"
"all the guys who worked in studios always said that mac is the best at everything"

Been a mac user since OS 7, i found that to be more stable than 10.5.8 (which i'm on now)

What i find frustrating is the updates, a lot devs cant keep up so my system isnt stable for up to six months sometimes while these guys iron out the kinks...

BTW, i get less from CPU now i'm on PT8 and leopard than i did with tiger and PT 7, what a load of crap!

Just a side note about RAM:
A few weeks ago, I've set up a "Pro" PC with 8GB RAM, an nlite'd XP 32bit SP3 and "Ram Disk Plus" version 10 from "Super Speed". Ram Disk Plus is quite expensive (US-$60), but it's the only tool I know of that allowed me to set up a 4,5GB RAM Drive without touching the system's available 3,2GB.
4,5GB is already something, and I'd recommend putting sample libraries with high required polyphony there, while leaving sample libs with lower polyphony on the hard drive, because these put less stress on the DFD (Direct-from-Disk) operation of your sampler.
I simply wrote a little startup batch file that will copy the sample lib of choice to the 4,5G RAM drive upon system startup, so you don't even have to do that manually after every boot. Works as intended :-)

@ ed8eb46a05df:
Could you *pleeaase* upload some samples? lol

Just for the info...
1 My production box gets a manual shut down every 20-25 days when I feel like doing it (Win crashes a lot, yeah righ!). lol
2 Thanks to sandboxing and my AV (freeware) I have never really faced a single successful malware virus attack since the release of XPSP2 when it was installed in that box using eth0 build (later upgraded to SP3 and tweaked a lot). I agree that a n00b frequenting questionable sites may have some other experience. The only factor that makes a box insecure is the user IMO.
3 in this era of advancement of the DAWs, latency issues are really not that important IMO. You just have to find the right daw for your boxes capability.
4 Actually i forgot what I really wanted to type in here... OK let's just say good luck playing voices of apocalypse and absynth in Ardour

@fiction thanx for the cool idea. I'll try it. yes

Windows 7 x64
Asus P5Q-E
Q9550 2.85GHz (overclocked on 3.4GHZ)
2x500GB RAID0
4x2GB Transcend DDR1066
GTX285 1GB
Motu UltraLite MK3 Firewire
Cubase 5 (legit)

... and...

I really DIDN'T HAVE and I DON'T have any problem with anything,
COMPLETE system works FLAWLES and PERFECT and STABLE,
use Cubase 5 x86 with 32-bit plugins and don't have ANY problem,
Win 7 x64 works crazy stable,
all hardware, so much software (also VST, VSTi) work great,
no crashes, no blocking...

I use Windows 7 x64

It works like a charm on ALL my software, from FL Studio 9, Guitar Rig 4 Pro, Reason 4, and the zillions of VST's and plugins that I use with them. Vista worked fine, but Windows 7 definitely took things to a more efficient level. Especially when trying to access my song files or various plugins. It is the little things that make using my software in Windows 7 quite awesome.

I use Cobol on my ZX81 with a few special connections I rigged it up to my Cray Mainframe and now have wonderful incredibly fast 3d grayscale screens, no use getting colour tv connected as I'm colour blind and mr J.M.Jarre when he pops over frequently likes to test his equipment and lasers on my backwards compatible to 1942 computer. He still hasn't returned my enigma typewriter that's why I'm using my trusty ZX81 flat keypad so I can spill all the cups of horlicks on it and it won't mess up the cpu.

Like fiction said, I wonder why you guys haven't mentioned XP 64. I'm planning to use it with my 8G RAM since I discovered how wonderful is Reaper and that the x64 version has been released in the scene. XP 64 (the drivers I need are available) + Reaper 64 + kontakt 64 + 8 gigs, let's rock baby!
[2009] Sorry for my English. I'm working on it
[2017] I'm beginning to improve. Hell yeah, I'm a fast learner :D

always a mac user, most recent is logic9 and snow leopard. however, i just today got an inexpensive pc windows 7 laptop for the first time in my life to dick around on. IOW, the macbook has all the costly daw stuff, gets babied and doesn't leave the house. the pc will be the 'beater' that i can take around with me and not really worry about what happens to it. ;)

but, i'm not gonna do any heavy audio with it...maybe just a sketchpad ideas when not sitting at my mac.

is there any windows version of live or maybe cubase....something that comes with vst instruments so i can just do electronic stuff with it? i don't think theres a full working version of either apps for mac. but i believe theres good ones on the pc side

Forget about Virtual machines ... It's just plain crap and way too over-hyped !

I'm on Vista/32 (because it was pre-installed with my computer), and it works just nice. I will probably upgrade to seven/32 one day or another ...

Mac OSX 10.5.8 running Windows 7 32bit via Bootcamp. I use both equally and honestly I've yet to encounter a problem with either. It only depends my mood as to which OS I use.

I use OSX for about 6 years now. Previously Windows.
I never look back anymore. OSX is much much better for making music. Almost zero latency by default, no registries slowing down your system, lower memory load, never crashes., ...
